Scouts are responsible for reviewing, verifying and completing all pre-requisite requirements. You must bring a written letter from your scoutmaster verifying completion of requirements or the actual work. All Scouts Must Bring: 1. Merit Badge Pamphlet {Book} 2. Merit Badge Worksheet 3. Notepaper with pen or pencil 4. LUNCH (no lunch sold) 5. Wear Class A Uniform (Except for Automotive, Electronics & Sports) Prerequisites for each Merit Badge are as follows: For Every Merit Badge, thoroughly read through Merit Badge Booklet. Print out worksheets from Meritbadge.org and fill out to the best of your ability. Listed below are the requirements needed to be completed prior to attending Merit Badge Workshops. There is an additional charge for Electronics Automotive Will be outside for a substantial amount of time and working on automobiles…make sure you are dressed appropriately. (Wear something that is warm and can get dirty, not your Class A) Mattabesett March Merit Badge Madness Page - 1 - Citizenship in the Nation -You will be asked to contact the councilor prior to this class and let him know which speech you have chosen so that the councilor will be familiar with the speech. -Take journal notes so your thoughts are collected prior to the class. (You can use the worksheets from Meritbadge.org to help take notes with some of the information) -Please make sure you have read the Merit Badge Booklet and filled out all requirements. Come prepared with our notes, pen/pencil, worksheets, and booklet. Also: o Tour a Federal Facility OR, Visit a place that is listed as a National Historic Landmark or that is on the National Register of Historic Places. Visit the http://www.nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com/ web site on the internet. o Watch the national evening news five days in a row OR read the front page of a major daily newspaper five days in arrow. Discuss the national issues you learned about with your counselor. Choose one of the issues and explain how it affects you and your family. o With the help of your Scout Leader choose a speech of national historical importance. Find out about the author and be prepared to tell your counselor about: the person who gave the speech. and explain the importance of the speech at the time it was given and tell how it applies to American citizens today. o Name your two senators and the member of Congress from your congressional district. Write a letter about a national issue and send it to one of these elected officials, sharing your view with him or her. Show your letter and any response you receive to your counselor. o Bring all work done to Merit Badge class. Citizenship in the World Read the Merit Badge Booklet and fill out all requirements. Use worksheets if this helps you organize your thoughts. 3a.Have sufficient information /understanding on world event. The scout will be presenting to the entire group. Be prepared to discuss the various aspects with the group. For example, if they want to present START, be ready to discuss what the treaty covers and what it doesn't cover 3b. Have sufficient information/understanding on choosen country. 5. Will need a good grasp of geography and be able to ID more than 5 types of governments or countries. This is a group setting. if, 7a. Visit US State Department website. Be prepared to discuss. if, 7b. come prepared to discuss human rights story if, 7c. Be prepared to present what you found out. if, 7d or 7e bring proof of attendance and be prepared to talk about the experience Mattabesett March Merit Badge Madness Page - 2 - Collections Bring your collection and be prepared to present it to the group and be able to answer questions outlined in the MB booklet. Crime Prevention: -Complete number 2 (notebook of newspaper clippings), -7 a or b (visit jail or criminal court hearing). The Scouts should also be encouraged to read through the requirements ahead of time for both badges so they will have some basis of knowledge. Anyone who brings their prerequisites and/or a note indicating they have completed them can still be signed off on the badge. Electricity o Complete an Electrical Home Safety Inspection, using the checklist found in the Electricity Merit Badge Booklet. Bring with you to workshop. o On a floor plan of a room in your home, make a wiring diagram of the lights, switches, and outlets. Show which fuse or circuit breaker protects each one.. Law Number 4 - Interview people on the role of law enforcement officers and interview a law enforcement officer(I can satisfy the last part, but they must speak with members of their community bring notes from interview with you to class). Music ( ½ day) 1 - Bring their instrument to the session with them to play. Also bring music and be ready to play a piece from written music. 2 - If doing number 3.c. Bring a note from their Music teacher, Parent, or Scoutmaster stated that they have completed Requirement # 3 C. - c. Serve for six months as a member of a school band, choir, or other local musical group; or perform as a soloist in public six times. 3. Be prepared for the additional requirements from requirement 3 and 4. Mattabesett March Merit Badge Madness Page - 3 - Scouting Heritage #4A – Bring Documentation of Attendance and Journal OR #4B – Write via email to the National Scouting Museum directed to Mr. Joe Connole - Joseph.Connole@Scouting.org Please include your name, rank, and mailing address so the information may be sent to you. #5 – Learn about the history of your Troop – Interview two leaders from your Troop and be prepared to discuss on March 17 with the class. This way we can all learn about the history of each other’s Troops. #6 – Bring your collection of Scouting patches or Scouting memorabilia #8 – Interview three (3) people over the age of 40 (Different from those in #5) who were Scouts when they were young and complete the requirement. Safety Merit Badge Prerequisites: Each Scout should complete all of the following prior to the class: Download and print a copy of the Safety Merit Badge Workbook@ meritbadge.org # 1: A, B, C, D & E # 2: A, Using attached Sample Safety Checklist # 3: B # 6 Don’t forget to contact the Counselor for your project approval ! # 7: A & B Please bring all the paperwork with you to the class so you can be sure to get a completed merit badge at the end of the class. I need proof that the safety project was carried out and completed prior to the class. (Photos and or Scoutmaster note) Otherwise the scout will receive a partial blue card.
