BBC und Siemens –
Eine strategische Partnerschaft – Basis für PQ
Im Oktober 2004 schlossen die BBC und Siemens einen 10-Jahresvertrag im
Gesamtwert von ca. 2,7 Milliarden Euro:
• 20% Kosteneinsparungen gegen Baseline 2004
• Betrieb der Technologie-Infrastruktur (Broadcast, IT und TK) für die BBC und deren Töchter
• Transformation der Broadcast-, TK und IT-Infrastruktur auf eine zukunftssichere, homogene
IT-Plattform
• Aufbau und Betrieb neuer broadcasttauglicher Kommunikationsverbindungen zwischen
Standorten in Großbritannien
• Beibehaltung oder Verbesserung existierender Service Level
• Das unabhängige UK National Audit Office bestätigte unlängst die Erreichung der Broadcast
relevanten Service Level zu 100%
• Commitment zur verantwortlichen Umsetzung großer Infrastruktur-Projekte*
Teil der Vereinbarung war die Übernahme der BBC-Tochter BBC Technology durch
Siemens
• Übernahme von 1.463 BBC-Mitarbeitern und deren Integration in die Siemens Organisation mit
entsprechenden Entwicklungs-Optionen
• Aufbau von Beziehungen zu den Gewerkschaften durch Siemens
• Ausbau der Position von Siemens im externen Medien-Markt

HD Capable
File Based Production
ƒ Fully HD capable facility
ƒ Tapeless facility, working with file based
media, from ingest through to transmission
ƒ Migration to HD will be relatively easily
ƒ But still recognizing that content will be
delivered in standard definition for the time
being
ƒ The infrastructure supports an end to end
HD operation
ƒ One of two studios equipped by us (790sq m)
will be the largest HD studio in Europe
ƒ Tapes are copied at nominated ingest points
ƒ A single content production system
(CPS - with 92 terabytes ) used for all
television production, including news is
enabling staff to log, view, story board and
assemble stories at the desktop over the IT
network
ƒ A digital library stores completed content
and enable its effective exchange, initially
across Scotland, and later with the wider
BBC
ƒ A common CPS across BBC Scotland for
all radio production

Build / Prime Integration
ƒ It started with running the procurement process for BBC Scotland and will end with the
handover of a working technology solution
ƒ Siemens has held responsibility for the technical design and is working as close partners
with BBC Scotland
ƒ Staff from BBC Scotland were members of the requirements, procurement and evaluation
teams
ƒ Practical completion of the Pacific Quay building was achieved in August 2006
ƒ At this point Siemens took on the principal contractor role with responsibility for construction,
design and management (CDM)
ƒ Siemens was responsible for ensuring the safety of the Pacific Quay site during the
technical installation phase and managing the activities of the different groups working on
the site
ƒ The new headquarters is a 34,000sq m, five storey building and is fully operational in
Summer 2007

As prime integrator we identified the right partners to
deliver a best working solution for BBC Scotland.

Control Room (MCR), television studios and
radio studios
ƒ TSL delivered the play-out and post
production news and graphics installation
work packages
ƒ Siemens worked closely with Avid for Craft
Edit and Ardendo for the Digital Library
ƒ Siemens Com is responsible for the
Voice over IP solution
ƒ Siemens led the technical migration and
ensured that there was a seamless move
from existing to new systems

ƒ Siemens is committed to providing an enhanced
quality of service, as well as delivering a 20% cost
saving
ƒ Siemens provides 24/7 cover from a single
integrated team that supports both broadcast
and IT technologies
ƒ The equipment remains in Scotland, but the staff
can be based elsewhere, reducing the support
costs for individual locations
