View this email in your browser Dear Brothers and Sisters, Annual Conference is one of my favorite times of the year. Clergy and laity from all over Alaska worship, learn, play, and make decisions together. This year, Bishop Grant Hagiya invited District Superintendents from the Oregon-Idaho and Pacific Northwest Conferences to come up and experience Annual Conference, Alaska-style. I don’t think they expected to see the Tongan choir sing and then eat a full Tongan pig roast dinner! And they definitely did not expect the Samoan choir to pull them into the middle of their performance and teach them how to dance! They certainly got a hearty “Welcome to Alaska” from all of our diverse churches. I attended two pre-conference workshops. One was on estate planning. The leader discussed the importance of financial planning as an opportunity to make bequests to those organizations that have been the most transformative to us. Bequests are specific gifts that people make through their wills. He challenged those of us in the session to ask ourselves and one another, “Who are those institutions or people that have had the greatest impact on your life? How would you like to remember them in your will?” Let us all reflect on those questions and in the near future plan on having a RS 5- 8:30am Men's breakfast at Caribou Restaurant 8- Pentecost Sunday, Communion Sunday, please wear Red 10- 12:45 Centering Prayer, 6pm Finance Comm mtg 13&14 Relay for Life 15-Father's Day, Lisa's 1 year Anniversary, Baked Potato Fund Raiser after service 16- 6pm Parsonage Study sub committee mtg 17- Active Parenting Class 5:15pm-7:30pm 22- Guest preacher Will Files 24-Active Parenting Class 5:15pm-7:30pm 26- Community Meal 5:307pm 27- Scrapbook/craft night 5pm Note: Pastor Lisa and Joe gone June 15-June 24 to attend the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference. larger conversation about the stewardship of our financial resources. The second workshop I attended was about historic trauma. This workshop was presented by Dr. Jim LaBelle and Rev. Charles Brower. They are both Alaska Native men who experienced life in boarding schools as children. They spoke of the way that trauma builds up in a culture over generations. The Alaska Native peoples have experienced multiple waves of trauma, including devastating illnesses and the loss of cultural identity, language, and spiritual practices. This intergeneration grief is sometimes numbed through alcohol and drug abuse, which are symptoms of the underlying trauma. Listening to the stories these men told was difficult. The temptation was to jump to problem-solving, but that would have been inappropriate. At that time and place, the most faithful thing I could do was be present and listen with an open heart. There were multiple opportunities to learn more about Imagine No Malaria, our worldwide mission to eradicate malaria. We heard stories of hope from Sierra Leone where deaths from malaria have decreased dramatically due to our efforts. We participated in the Imagine No Malaria 5K Fun Run/Walk. Over the course of the weekend through various auctions, offerings, and activities, we raised over $7,000 for Imagine No Malaria! We are well on our way to meeting our Alaska Conference goal of raising $150,000 by 2016. Here at home, we need a few passionate people who are willing to ignite our church’s and community’s enthusiasm for this special cause. The United Methodist Church changes lives, and you are part of that transformative tradition. Thank you all for your ministry. Will Files will be preaching on June 22nd. Alan Olson has stepped in to host our services. All of these folks are sharing on Sundays when our Pastor Lisa and Joe are gone either on vacation or at conferences. While we miss them, we are grateful our congregation has so many lay people who can lead our services. Thanks to all who are helping with our worship while Pastor Lisa is away. Our HUMC congregation works hard to be a welcoming church, but we know we can always improve. The Worship Committee has a training packet for learning new greeting skills. We will be meeting "Master Greeter" Rich Liedtke, a friend of Dotty Cline's from college, who trains congregations--either in person or via video--to gain new and improved welcoming skills. We will be sharing Rich's training video in several sessions soon, so watch for your opportunity to be a part of one of these greeter-training sessions. Here's a tip: Rich will show us ways to greet and welcome new people even when we aren't standing at the door as official greeters! Finance Committee The Finance Committee would like to encourage members of the church to sign up for eScrip through Safeway. You can choose Homer United Methodist Church The Finance Committee meets monthly to receive the financial report. We examine the expenditures and look at the amount that we have to pay the bills. We also receive a pastor’s report at these meetings. Meetings are open to the public. The annual budget is available upon request. Contact David Nofziger, Treasurer, for a copy of the budget for the Homer United Methodist Church. At the May meeting we could see that we are consistently 10% below the amount needed for expenses. We have been covering all the bills with a reserve amount. The apportionments have not been paid to date. The situation is not dire, but we do need to address this shortfall. The need for fundraisers was discussed with several options suggested. Caroline will be in touch with members that would like to serve on this committee. Pastor Lisa reported that we have raised $2,200 for the Imagine No malaria Fund, which was a three year pledge with the to receive funds for shopping purchases at our local Safeway grocery store! conference. Treasurer Mary Fell will be preparing quarterly giving statements, and with those will be a treasurer’s report. The next meeting is scheduled for June 10 at 6:15 pm. Mary Fell Treasurer Congratulations to Ruth and Harold Gnad! They will be celebrating their 74th wedding anniversary and Ruth's 97th birthday both on June 17th. What wonderful milestones. We have appreciated both Harold and Ruth in our church for many years. So, Ruth and Harold, we send you our love and appreciation. Blessings on you! Parsonage Study Committee The first meeting of the Parsonage Study Committee was held May 12th. The following members were in attendance: Bill Kunkler, Shirley Forquer, Gary Lyon, Franco Venuti, Don Stead, Sherry Stead, Joe Talbott, Lisa Talbott, and Tirzah Parsons. Those that were missed were: Maynard Gross, Tom Early, and Karin Sonnen. The requirements from the Book of Discipline for such a committee were reviewed, as were conference requirements related to a parsonage. Basically, this committee performs research and analysis about options for safe and healthy living quarters for our clergy. It then assembles this information into a report that will be presented at a charge conference. We used the information from the Book of Discipline to formulate four options and then formed four sub-committees to perform the research. The options being focused on are: 1.) Renovating the existing structure, 2.) Purchasing another existing structure, 3.) Building a new structure, and 4.) Providing . Congregation Spotlight: Tammy Bradley a housing allowance. These committees are off and running. Several have had their first meetings, and the gathering of information has begun. The first sub-committee, "Renovate", members are Bill Kunkler, Joe Talbott, and Franco Venuti. "Purchasing another structure" and "Housing Allowance" members are Sherry Stead and Shirley Forquer. "Building a new Structure" members are Don Stead, Franco Venuti, Gary Lyon, and Tom Early. The next order of business was to elect a chair person of the overall study committee. Don Stead did not withdraw his name and is now the new chair person. Please feel free to contact any of the members of this committee to provide input. Our next meeting of the full committee is scheduled for July 7th ,6 PM, at the church. You may attend and observe. Input maybe constrained, however, due to time limitations.
