Glossary
A group may include but is not limited to a group of consumers/tangata whai ora, and
a team may include but is not limited to a team of workers within a workplace who
may or may not be multi-disciplinary in composition.

Assessment notes
This unit standard may be assessed on the basis of evidence of demonstrated
performance in the workplace, or through the use of simulated workplace situations
that closely approximate the performance required in workplace settings. Evidence
may be gathered from an actual workplace in either a group or team setting, a
simulated workplace situation, or participation in a classroom setting, or any
combination.
The following applies to the performance of both outcomes of this unit standard. All
activities must comply with:
a
service provider guidelines, protocols, staff manuals, strategic plans, kawa,
tikanga;

Mental Health Commission. 2001. Recovery competencies for New Zealand
mental health workers. Wellington: Mental Health Commission;

relevant cultural, legislative, and regulatory requirements, which include but are
not limited to: Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights 1996;
NZS 8134:2001, Health and Disability Sector Standards; Health and Disability
Services (Safety) Act 2001; Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; Human
Rights Act 1993; Official Information Act 1982; Privacy Act 1993.

All communications with group or team members and within the group or team are
treated confidentially. The limits of confidentiality are set according to criteria that
include but are not limited to – legislation, codes of conduct, and service provider
guidelines. These may include but are not limited to – the Official Information Act
1982; Privacy Act 1993; and codes of practice issued by the Privacy Commissioner.
Service provider guidelines means the guidelines of the service provider where the
assessment against this unit standard is taking place.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Describe issues for working as a group or team in mental health support work.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Essential elements of group or team formation are described.
Range
1.2
Group work theory is outlined in terms of the stages and dynamics of a group
and the different needs within a group.
Range
1.3

and commitment to the group or team; ground rules; kawa or
protocols for each meeting and relationships within the group or
team; leadership.

Evidence is required of one group work theory and all of the needs

Principles and skills for dealing with conflict within a group or team are
described.
Range

limited to – enhancing clear and accurate communication;

feelings, needs, and views; focusing people on listening to others;
enabling people to move through blocks to conflict resolution;
generating options to resolve conflict; clarifying points of
agreement; evaluating progress towards conflict resolution;
enabling people to try different options to resolve conflict; win-win.
Evidence is required of four principles or skills.

Outcome 2
Contribute to group or team functioning and achievement of group or team objectives for
mental health support work.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Identification of group or team objectives is assisted by the mental health
support worker's contributions to the group or team.
Range
objectives for mental health support work may include but are not
limited to – support of mental health consumers/tangata whai ora;
management of supported accommodation or other premises
shared by the group or team; co-ordination of the group or team.
Evidence is required of one objective.
2.2
The mental health support worker’s own behaviour within the group or team is
in accordance with agreed rules for group or team member behaviour.
2.3
Feedback to other group or team members focuses on encouraging
contributions from other group or team members.
Range
feedback – verbal, non-verbal.
2.4
Contributions focus on assisting the group or team to evaluate progress in
terms of decision making and achievement of group or team objectives.
2.5
Where necessary, the group or team is assisted to amend its objectives or
plans according to the outcomes of the progress evaluation.

the last date for assessment set out below.

Please note
Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA,
before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses
of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
