1. The border between Iraq and Kuwait was created
by Britain in 1899. Iraq was upset by this and refused to
accept Kuwait’s government for many years.
2. In 1990, Iraq, led by Saddam
Hussein invaded Kuwait.
Within hours Iraq controlled
the country, including it’s oil
and Persian Gulf coastline.
3. Many parts of the world were worried that Iraq now
controlled so much oil. They were also worried about the
weapons Iraq might have.

4. In 1991, an alliance of countries led by the USA
forced the Iraqis out of Kuwait. This six- week event
was called the Persian Gulf War. It was also known
as Operation Desert Storm.
5. Before they were forced out of Kuwait, Iraqi forces set fire to
several hundred oil wells. These fires burned out of control and
took months and many volunteers to help extinguish.

6. After the Persian Gulf War, Saddam
Hussein would not accept the United
Nation’s terms for peace. Because of
this the UN placed an embargo, or
limit on trade, with Iraq. This hurt Iraq’s
economy.
7. Saddam was also instructed to
destroy all his weapons that could cause
major destruction and allow inspectors
in to make sure he was following orders.
8. After 9/11, the US suspected Iraq
was also helping terrorists.

In 2003 the US went to war with Iraq.
Saddam went into hiding, but was later
arrested, tried and executed for his crimes
against his people.

10. The war in Iraq ended in 2011. The
country is trying to start a new democratic
government and rebuild after years of war.
