Course aims:
By the end of the year you will be working at a professional level with an in-depth knowledge of renewable
energies, fault finding and diagnosis, and the electrical science that underpins the entire electrical industry.
The course embraces both theory and practical.
Course content:
Course content year 3
• Unit 602 Understanding environmental legislation, working practices and the principles of environmental
technology systems
• Unit 608 Understanding the principles, practices and legislation for diagnosing and correcting electrical
faults in electro-technical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
• Unit 609 Understanding the electrical principles associated with the design, building, installation and
maintenance of electrical equipment and systems
Facilities for students:
This course is based at the Main Campus for City College in the heart of Brighton.
The Electrical Section is in a purpose-built unit, with well-equipped workshop facilities. There is a main library,
computer rooms, excellent food, chill out areas and lots more.
Please note, from 2017 onwards, the course will be in our new purpose built construction facility based at City
College East.

The Electrical department is staffed by experienced, supportive and well-motivated lecturers who care deeply
about the students they are tasked to engage with.
Assessment: The assessments for this course are a mixture of exams and practical assessment.

Minimum 90% attendance- this is crucial, as any time missed will have a massive impact on learning

Progression and links:
Complete a full 2357 NVQ course by engaging in work based units; you must have an employer for this.
Level 3 awards in the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment (PAT) and the management
requirements for the maintenance of electrical equipment. City and guilds 2377
Level 3 award in requirements for electrical installations BS7671:2008 (2015) 2382-15
Level 3 award in the Periodic inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations (2395-01)
Level 4 higher professional diploma in building services engineering (4467.)

Offers of apprenticeships are based on the requirements of the employers when they approach. The key
thing is to ensure you show quality and competency throughout the course.
The work based units are separate from your theory units at college, and extra fees are due for this.

THIS COURSE IS ELIGIBLE FOR AN ADVANCED LEARNER LOAN
Further information: Students must provide their own steel-toe-capped boots. You will not be allowed in the
workshop without them.
It is also expected that students will buy a copy of the On-Site Guide (approx £20) and a textbook (approx
£20).
