The Title III grant funding, provided by the federal government to strengthen developing educational institutions, begins this month for a period of five years to enhance SCC students’ academic success. The grant incorporates assistance with English, reading and math, subjects that are frequent stumbling blocks. “The recently awarded Title III grant is a unique opportunity for Santiago Canyon College to improve its instructional services for students and faculty in multiple ways,” said college President Juan Vázquez. “These additional resources provide exciting possibilities for our college and will have a profound impact on our students’ educational achievements.” The four components of the grant are: student learning outcomes and assessment (including ongoing training for faculty); an academic success center to strengthen students’ readiness for college classes; a state-of-the-art math study hall to provide one-on-one and computer-assisted instruction; and the development of learning communities that provide students with a research-based approach to integrated learning. The grant will be coordinated by Dr. Melinda Womack, speech communication professor and department chair. She will work closely with faculty facilitators from throughout the college to implement the components of the grant. Santiago Canyon College is a public community college of Rancho Santiago Community College District, serving the residents of Anaheim Hills, Irvine, Orange, Tustin and Villa Park. The college provides education for academic transfer and careers, courses for personal and professional development, and customized training for business and industry. ###
