Free Child Care Offered to Students
February 7—Santiago Canyon College’s Continuing Education division is offering free, onsite
child care to students enrolled in Saturday classes at the Orange Education Center (OEC),
located at 1465 N. Batavia in Orange. This free service is available for children aged 3-6 years.
The OEC Child Development Center is accredited by the National Association for the
Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the nation's leading organization of early childhood
professionals. This accreditation lets families in the community know that children are receiving
the best care and early learning experiences.
Continuing education classes are free to anyone 18 years and older. Classes are held on
Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The free, non-credit
classes offered at the OEC include business skills (computer and software training), English for
non-native speakers, high school diploma completion, GED preparation and citizenship. All
classes are open entry/open exit, which means that students can start and stop at any time.
Qualified teachers provide instruction and help to students.
“We want to give parents of young children this special opportunity to try our free
Saturday classes,” said Jose Vargas, vice president of continuing education. “Parents can learn
new skills to improve their lives and have peace of mind knowing that their children are nearby
receiving excellent care.”
The Orange Education Center opened just one year ago, and is the newest facility of its
kind in Orange County. The 92,000 square foot building includes twenty-two classrooms, two
