Parliament – part of the British government that makes laws
Sons of Liberty – an organized group of colonists who led the fight against
taxation
Delegate – a person who acts or speaks for others
First Continental Congress – the 1774 meeting of delegates from the colonies
Patriot – a person who loves and supports his or her country
Revolution – a complete and often violent change of government
Loyalist – an American colonist who remained loyal to Britain
Continental Army – a group of soldiers from the colonies, led by George
Washington
Independence – freedom
Declaration of Independence – document explaining why American colonists were
breaking from Britain
Redcoat – a British soldier
Hessian – a German soldier paid by the British to fight Americans
Ally-friend or helper
Militia –a part-time army of local citizens
