PROPERTIES OF WATER INVESTIGATION OBJECTIVE: Demonstrate and analyze the properties of adhesion, cohesion, surface tension and polarity. PROCEDURES: 1. Put a drop of water between two glass slides. Try to pull the slides apart. Describe what happens. 2. How many drops of water can be placed on a penny before they spill off? 3. Distribute pepper flakes or coffee grounds over the surface of a beaker of water. Describe what happens. 4. Add a drop of dish detergent to the beaker with pepper flakes. Describe what happens. 5. ALL TEAMS WILL PERFORM THIS AT THE SAME TIME! In your team, have one student stand on a chair or counter holding one end of a string. Have a second student hold the other end of the string over a beaker on the floor. The third student will slowly and carefully pour water from a beaker over the string (place a tub below the point of pouring). Describe what happens. ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSIONS: 1. Write an explanation in terms of adhesion, cohesion, surface tension and hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions for each activity.
