Mrs. Reavis’s 2nd Grade News January 20-23, 2015 Letterland: Unit 14: Ernest Er and Bothersome Baby Brother **Please REFER to the handout in your child’s folder titled “Letterland Step-by-Step Homework” for homework that will be on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday! There will be a letterland test on FRIDAY (Jan. 23rd) so it is very important that your child does this homework (Jan. 19-22) each night to prepare for the test that will be FRIDAY, January 23rd! Please note that the “New Sentences” must be written correctly to receive credit on the test so practicing writing these two sentences each night is a good idea! List A: sister, second, tiger, earth, person, brother, heard, number, another, wonder, above, doctor Tricky Words: father, family Review Words: nurse, Thursday, thirty, sports, large, wrong, knife, own New Sentences to Master: “I wonder where the rainbow colors come from.” & “My father will take me to the doctor.” (sentences must be written with correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation) Reading: “A Weed Is A Flower”, pages 430-453 Genre: Biography Phonics: Comparative Endings Comprehension Skill: Cause and Effect ***Please have your child read this story each night for fluency and comprehension…however….they must return the book each day to school! Selection TEST —Please note that your child receives two grades for the test—1. High Frequency Word Grade and 2. Comprehension Grade Math: Standards: MD.7 Tell time to the nearest 5 minutes using an analog clock Tell time using am and pm Read a digital clock Write time to the nearest 5 mintues MD.8 Identify the name of each coin and its value Count and Compare Sets of coins and write the cent sign correctly Count whole Dollar Combinations Make and Recognize EQUAL Collections of coins and whole Dollar Amounts Solve Money Word Problems Use the “dollar” and “cents” sign correctly NBT.4 Compare two three digit numbers. NBT.5 Add and Subtract numbers within 100 based on place value and other addition/subtraction strategies NOTES: It is very, very IMPORTANT that your child go on the following websites each night for at least 15 minutes each: www.vmath.com & www.readingeggs.com It is IMPERATIVE that our children GROW with their math and reading skills! 3rd Grade Reading expectations are hard and IF we don’t PUSH for our reading skills to increase in 2nd grade…the task of reaching 3rd grade status will prove to be very difficult.
