Hrothgar’s herald and captain. He introduces Beowulf to Hrothgar and vouches for his integrity

They’ve come to help the Danes, they’ve brought weapons are impressive and Beowulf is a might
warrior, powerful, and wise

His older brother, Hergar, had died; Hrothgar sent treasure to the Wulfings to end the feud. Edgetho
pledged his allegiance to Hrothgar.
8. What is the purpose of the feast that Hrothgar hosts in Beowulf’s honor?
To celebrate Beowulf’s arrival; toast his victories
9. Why does Unferth bring up Beowulf’s swimming match with Brecca? How does Beowulf respond?
Because he is jealous of Beowulf; he doesn’t want there to be anyone stronger than himself. Beowulf
responds with his version of the story and a boast about killing a monster that attacked him in the
sea.
12. Beowulf continues with his story, countering Unferth’s tale. How does his tale end?
He killed nine monsters; Unferth has only killed his own brothers; if he were truly strong and mighty, he
would have killed Grendel by now.
13. What is Welthow’s role in Herot? What does the narrator praise her for? (Did you spot the
kenning?)
She offers a cup to each of the warriors. She knew what was right.
14. What is the significance of Hrothgar’s speech before he goes to sleep?
He’s put a lot of trust in Beowulf by letting him take care of Grendel.
15. What are Beowulf’s thoughts as he waits for Grendel’s arrival?
God has decided he should be there and will protect him. If it isn’t meant to be, he will accept that
fate as well. Angry at the thought of meeting Grendel.
