Cells and Systems- Vocabulary Cell The smallest unit of life. Some organisms are made of just one cell. Others are made of many cells. Nucleus This is the “brain” of the cell. It controls the cells functions. Cytoplasm This is the Jellylike substance in the cell that gives the cell a shape. It fills the empty places and holds the organelles in place. Cell wall The stiff outer wall of a plant cell that helps the cell hold its shape. Examples are muscle tissue, nervous tissue, connective tissues. Organ Groups of Tissues working together to perform a function. Examples are heart, liver, stomach, brain, and intestines. System Groups of organs working together to perform a function.
