STAGE I – DESIRED RESULTS
LESSON TOPIC (Module, if applicable):
The students will continue the chapter on rights of the
accused. The students will be exposed to some of the
important court cases relating to the rights of the accused as
well as the different protections and limits on this freedom.
BIG IDEAS:

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
What are the protections under the Fifth, Sixth, and Eight
Amendments? Why are the rights of the accused so important?
How can I use my rights during the arrest process? What
landmark rulings came from the Danny Escobedo and Miranda
court cases?
Students will understand: The students will understand the constitutional
protections of the Fifth, Sixth, and Eight Amendments. Students will
understand why the rights of accused persons are important. Students will
understand how rights are used for accused persons during the arrest process.

Students will be able to:
SWBAT demonstrate their knowledge of the rights of the
accused by explaining how the Eight, Sixth, and Fifth
Amendments protect citizens. SWBAT understand the arrest
process and how our rights are protected. SWBAT analyze
important court cases regarding accused rights and apply the
importance to their own lives.
STAGE II – ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE
PERFORMANCE TASK: Students will be assessed on the
completion of the new vocabulary. Students will write short
answer responses to the material and questions discussed and
read in class. Notes completed in their composition books will
be awarded points.
