TODAY’S OBJECTIVES:
Students will examine how the author’s purpose affects
his/her use of language and choice of form.
AGENDA:
1. Complete a T- chart on the following topic: You have received
a draft notice TODAY saying you have to report to war. You
have two options:
 Leave and serve your country, or
 Flee the United States of America
Regardless, your life will change dramatically. Which would
you choose? With partner, list at least three pros and cons of
your decision. Then individually write a letter to a significant
person explaining and defending your choice. Turn in at end
of period.
2. With clock buddy, read excerpts from “How to Tell a
True War Story” from The Things They Carried
(pp.65-76); write down all the different ways that a war
story is true. What is the author’s point about making
such a big deal about the validity of war stories? As a
class, discuss why Rat Kiley killed the baby water
buffalo…
3. Watch PBS Documentary Bloods in ‘Nam. What rhetorical
devices (ethos, pathos, logos) does the director use to make
his story compelling?
4. Continue Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers.
