Job Title (code): IT Specialist IV (9807) Purpose Purpose: Persons in the IT Specialist IV classification install, support, and configure desktop computing or basic data communications/ telecommunications equipment and software and perform diagnostics of problems with that hardware and software. Persons in ITS IV positions work independently and are responsible for a significant Essential Functions Function 1: Supervise and manage job contractors to ensure that wiring standards and standard products are implemented during remodeling activities, and when satisfying customer requests for physical network modifications. 20 % Time Function 2: Maintain the local area network or wide area network, cable and hub room installations, and inventories. Measure, characterize, and document fiber and copper network segments, and make corrections to maintain reliability with minimum service disruptions. 40 % Time Function 3: Maintain shared fiber plant for life safety (fire alarm, police video surveillance, emergency announcement) and operational (telephony, energy management, private video, tele-presence) and provide private campus-wide point to point fiber communications links for these systems. 20 % Time Function 4: Assist with locating and marking underground cabling infrastructure in accordance with industry guidelines and Texas Administrative Code, Title 16. 20 % Time Function 5: % Time Function 6: % Time Function 7: % Time Function 8: % Time Marginal/Incidental Functions Marginal/Incidental Functions: Other related functions as assigned. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Bachelor?s Degree in related field and three years of related computing work experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required: Prior experience with specific systems, equipment and software may be specified as needed by department. Knowledge of principles of computing and communications networks, and characteristics of computing hardware and software used in distributed environment. Ability to install and configure computer hardware and software. Ability to install and configure basic data communications and or telecommunications hardware with some supervision with no supervision. Ability to assimilate, retain and utilize technical and applications-oriented information. Preferred Qualifications: Must be experienced in local and wide area network work. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in computer science, management information systems, or a related field is generally preferred, and seven or more years of applicable experience. Education and experience may be substituted for one another.
