Description
Reading and Vocabulary 5 is for non-native speakers of English who are international
students. This course focuses on increasing reading comprehension, library skills,
information literacy skills, as well as enhancing vocabulary and vocabulary skills.
Master Course Outcomes
 Use word study techniques such as context clues and word analysis.
 Identify roots and affixes in word forms and use affixes to decode meaning.
 Identify main ideas and details.
 Apply grammar and sentence structure rules to reading comprehension.
 Write timed short answers based on reading in class.
 Make inferences.
 Identify author bias/credibility of a text.
 Recognize figurative language.
 Recognize discourse indicators (beginning, transitions, developing, emphasizing,
clarifying of ideas).
 Access and evaluate information from the library and the Internet.
 Write short reports or summaries about selected readings.

Requirements
• Attend class regularly and be on time.
• 5 absences: Warning notice.
• 10 absences: You will fail the class. If you continue to miss the class five times
after this notice, you will not be allowed to repeat the course.
• 15 absences: Dismissal
• Arriving to class late (tardy) causes you to miss important information. If you are
late for the start of your class (3) times, it is considered one absence.
• Bring all materials to class every day.
• Respect and listen to other students and the teacher.
• Only speak English.
• Participate in all class activities and do all your work on time.

Academic Honesty
Plagiarism means to take another person’s words or answers and use them as your own.
Plagiarism is cheating, and cheating is not allowed. You must do all of your own work.
Any student plagiarizing will receive a zero for the assignment and may fail the class.
Assessment
Your grade will be determined through a combination of the following factors:
 Attendance/Participation 10%
 Homework/Assignments 20%
 Book reports 25%
 Quizzes/Tests 45%
To pass to Level 6
 Have a minimum grade of 75% in both reading and vocabulary
 Score 75% on both your reading vocabulary finals
 Pass your G/W class and finals with 75%

Class Environment
Please turn off your phone and put it away before class. You may drink non-alcoholic
beverages, but please do not eat unless you have a medical reason with a doctor’s note.
