Emphasis will be on interacting with others, narrating and describing events, using appropriate verb tense(s), listening for main ideas and details, and learning how to listen to lectures and take basic notes. Required Text: Quest Intro-Listening and Speaking, 2nd edition. Improve your spoken English for conversational and academic purposes Improve your comprehension of spoken English, both formal and informal Recognize the feelings of the speaker through non-verbal cues and intonation Improve academic skills like note-taking, summarizing, outlining, managing time, and working in groups 5. Broaden your vocabulary and improve pronunciation of common, irregular spelling patterns 6. Practice speaking fluently as well as correctly COURSE REQUIREMENTS Attendance: Come to class on time and prepared to learn. Poor attendance or tardiness will affect your participation grade. More than 10 absences—for any reason— are grounds for failing this class, which may negatively affect your visa status. Respect: Respect yourself and your classmates by coming to class on time, raising your hand before you speak, and turning off all electronic devices before class. IMPORTANT -NSCC’s policy: Do not wear fragrances (perfume, cologne, etc.) because many people are sensitive to these chemicals. Academic Honesty: Please do not copy from other people’s work, whether it is from a tutor, a book, or another student. This is called Plagiarism and is not allowed in U.S. academic culture. In order to take full advantage of this, you must participate! That means coming to class prepared, on time, and ready to contribute. Assignments …………………………………….……………………………………………………….40% Assignments, both written and oral, in-class and homework, need to be done regularly to help both you and I see what you understand and how I can help you continue to improve. Assignments will be graded on a point scale of 0-4 points: 0- not tried 1- incomplete (25%) 2- complete but with significant mistakes (50%) 3- complete and mostly correct (75%) 4-complete and correct (100%) Missing assignments, or assignments receiving a 2 or below, can be made up within one week of the due date, for a maximum of 3 points. Speak to me about making up oral or in-class work after an absence. Tests, Midterm, and Final Presentation……….…………………………………………………30% Chapter tests, midterm, and the final presentation are opportunities for you to show what you have mastered in this class. Note to Students: There will be a common Final Exam administered to all students in all sections of IEP 033. Please be aware that in order to move up a level, you must pass this class and the final exam with at least a 75%.
