Class 2 Backpack Vest
There are several reasons why digital mapping is best done wearing a mapping vest. A pen tablet
can be conveniently carried in an inside pocket of a vest thus providing both convenience and
protection for the pen tablet leaving both hands free for mapping and hiking. Secondly,
geological mapping often takes us near roads and freeways where safety demands that we wear
field apparel that meets stringent Visibility Standards meet ANSI 107-1999 ANSI Class 2
specifications for visibility near traffic and the nature of the work we do which often focuses out
attention onto outcrops and away from traffic. A “backpack” vest is ideal for this purpose as it
offers many large pockets that can be used for rain apparel, water, rock and soil samples, and
other field supplies.
