Reading/Writing Math Students analyze cause and effect text structure to understand the concepts and ideas associated with the Columbian Exchange and issues affecting the Chesapeake Bay. Students will be reading literature around the topic of the Chesapeake Bay. Students will complete an informational essay based on research about the Chesapeake Bay in order to write an informed opinion essay about the importance of keeping the bay healthy. Students will use their knowledge of word relationships to demonstrate their understanding of the meaning of synonyms and antonyms and use domainspecific vocabulary. Students will apply understanding of the four operations in order to solve single and multistep word problems. Problems will involve measurement; determining area and perimeter; interpreting remainders; understanding of place value and determining unknowns and using a variable to represent the unknown. Science Social Studies Students will study economics where they live to create a framework for examining the role that economics played in determining the destinations, goals, and actions of early European explorers. Students begin by exploring relationships among regional specialization and interdependence of people in Maryland today. Students then explore basic decision-making concepts involved in the production and consumption of goods and services using examples from individuals, businesses, and government. In week 5, students are challenged to identify opportunity costs of decisions made by individuals, businesses, and government. Happy New Year! 2016 Important Dates! Students will construct and conduct their own investigations to observe, conclude, and infer the effects of pollution and/or pollution by-products on the environment. Students will then investigate the natural or human-made factors that can disrupt a stable environment and consider how human decisions and actions throughout the state of Maryland can be both beneficial and harmful to the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.
