Reading Math Students compare the structure of poems, plays, and prose and describe the similarities and differences. Students read poetry and discuss the author’s use of similes and metaphors to add description to writing. Using a realistic novel, students determine theme and compare and contrast events. Students use the theme to summarize portions Writing of text and discuss point of view. Students will describe and identify points, lines, and line segments, including parallel and perpendicular lines. Students will identify these geometric features as well as lines of symmetry in 2-dimensional figures. Students continue to develop their understanding of geometry and geometric measurement. Students are introduced to angles as geometric shapes and recognize an angle that turns through of a circle as a onedegree angle. Students also learn that an angle can be composed of more than one angle. Students classify 2-dimensional shapes by properties of their lines and angles Students will reflect on a personal experience to compose a memoir. After examining characteristics of memoir, students recall an event from their life and reflect on that experience. Students will then explore structure and language of poems while reading and analyze the components of poetry and literary mood while creating their own poetry. Science Students begin the understanding that Earth materials can be studied to provide evidence of Earth’s changing surface over time by identifying, describing, and comparing observable properties of matter. Students apply these properties specifically to rocks. This blends of Physical and Earth Space Sciences leads students to the understanding that rocks are made of a combination of materials. Students will investigate the processes that form rocks and will use the process to classify rocks. Social Studies Students will gather, record, and analyze information about the three regions of colonial America, the New England, Middle, and Southern regions. They will determine how colonists adapted to and modified the environment to meet their wants. Students explore the concept of regional specialization and its role in economic growth of the colonies.
