4th Grade September Newsletter Welcome to Fourth Grade Reading/Writing Math Students focus on reading historical and realistic fiction. Students identify the characteristics of Historical Fiction and analyze the setting and its relationship to an event in history or time period. Students explore the impact the setting has on the characters and the sequence of events. Students use their knowledge of historical fiction for a writing project later in the marking period. During the reading language arts block, students learn routines and ground rules for collaborative discussions. Students extend place value understandings to read, write, and compare numbers to 1,000,000. Students use place value understandings to round numbers less than or equal to 1,000,000 to any place. The critical understanding is that a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. Students continue to review and practice multiplication and division basic facts. Social Studies Science Students use different types of maps to locate and describe natural/physical and human-made features of Maryland and the United States today. They analyze information to determine relationships among geographic characteristics such as humanmade and physical features and settlement patterns. Students also begin a timeline of history to which they add throughout the marking period and year. Students explore the components of land and water ecosystems. Students apply the engineering design process as they construct models of a land and water ecosystem. Throughout this marking period students will use these models to explore the concepts of living things, their basic needs, and the relationships between living organisms to each other and to the non-living components of an ecosystem.
