CHARACTER OF THE JOB
Incumbents perform tasks in the barns, fields, or dairy at a competent level, using developed
farming skills and receiving general supervision. They operate a variety of equipment within
well-defined guidelines and ensure that necessary standards and quality controls are maintained.
Supervision of other employees is not a requirement at this level, however, incumbents could
assist in the introductory training of new employees, casual workers and/or students hired to
positions at lower levels and in the orientation of new employees hired at the same level.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 Operates a variety of equipment and/or machinery to accomplish certain purposes such as: the
feeding, breeding, care and maintenance of cattle, sheep, swine or poultry; hauling of materials
and livestock, ploughing, harvesting, etc., for field work; manufacturing, processing and
packaging dairy products.
 Performs animal care/processing, such as ear notching, teeth nipping, weighing, tagging and
hoof trimming.
 Assists in animal surgeries.
 Assists with castrating, vaccinations and probing.
 Reports health status of livestock to supervisor.
 Under direction of a supervisor, administers drugs and other treatments.
 Demonstrates animal care techniques to students.
 Assists in keeping specific records or data (e.g., feed consumption, production, disease,
mortality).
 Maintains cleanliness of areas and equipment according to regulations and practices such as:
cleaning livestock/poultry quarters and facilities; maintenance and making minor repairs to
equipment (e.g., barn equipment, waterbowls, feeders); cleaning and sterilizing dairy
equipment.
 Assists with receipt of goods from related areas or external suppliers.
 Assists in the collection of products and samples for experimental designs.
 Transports crop related materials and livestock in accordance with transportation regulations.
 Conducts daily work in accordance with WHMIS and University of Manitoba animal care
policies.
 Assists in mixing and testing of products in dairy operations.
 Incumbents at this level are expected to perform those duties of junior agricultural attendants,
as appropriate.
 Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are:
Level of Formal Education
 An agricultural degree or diploma
- or  High school completion plus two years of directly-related agricultural experience.
 A valid Class 5 Manitoba driver=s license required. Depending on position and area of work, a
valid Class 3 Manitoba driver=s license with air brake endorsement may be required.
Experience
 Experience with personal computers, databases and computerized record-keeping systems may
be required depending on work area.
 An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Skills and Abilities
 Ability to operate equipment and vehicles observing all safety and University regulations and
practices.
 Mechanical aptitude.
 Knowledge of modern methods and techniques of animal or avian care and management.
 Ability to keep accurate records.
 Good oral and written communication skills and ability to relate effectively with staff, students and
general public.
 Familiarity with WHMIS, University of Manitoba animal care policies and transportation
regulations preferred.
Physical Requirements
 Lifting up to 40 kg may be required.
 Will involve shift work or weekend work on a rotating basis.
 Good dexterity and the ability to work in various positions as is required in handling and
management of farm livestock and equipment.
 No allergies to livestock or plants and their products.
 Must be capable of performing the duties as assigned.
