CLASS SPECIFICATION Agriculture Attendant 4 Revision Date: August 2005 Classification: Unit: Hay Point Range: Agriculture Attendant 4 AESES 243 – 288 CHARACTER OF THE JOB This is the experienced supervisory level of positions and incumbents. Incumbents work under general direction and within general guidelines, and direct the work of subordinates in accomplishing the efficient operation of a unit or area. Incumbents carry out experimental projects within the unit and instruct students in the use of equipment and existing practices. Certain positions will require major repair of equipment. Depending on the position and the unit of work, some Agricultural Attendants are required to reside at the work site in order to provide evening or off-duty checks and to be available for emergency calls and other situations - e.g., during farrowing, calving and power outage. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Plans, organizes and directs daily work duties of all others working in an organizational unit: in Dairy Operations this involves preparation of dairy produce, testing and quality control plus research-related work. in Animal Operations this involves breeding, raising and caring for animals and birds plus research-related work. in Crop Operations this involves planting, cultivating, spraying, irrigating and harvesting of crops plus research-related work, ensuring after hours supervision and coverage in evenings. Performs or directs all servicing and repairs to equipment, machinery and facilities. Collects relevant data, keeps records and performs calculations to determine quality and quantity of work produced in an area. Supervises students in work experience programs. Assists academic staff with research projects and instructs students in appropriate techniques and practices. Performs vaccinations, castration, probing and selection of animals for breeding and research trials. Arranges for acquisition or disposal of animals. Is responsible for proper care of plots, animals and/or facilities. Ensures that health and sanitary regulations and practices are observed. Responsible for maintenance of staff records (absentee/vacation reports and schedules). Reviews budgets on a monthly basis. Conducts daily work in accordance with WHMIS, University of Manitoba animal care policies and transportation regulations. Incumbents at this level are expected to perform those duties of junior agricultural attendants, as appropriate. Performs other related duties as required or assigned. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are: Level of Formal Education An agricultural degree/diploma plus three years of directly-related experience - or Completion of high school plus five years of directly-related experience Experience Supervisory experience, including planning, organizing and directing the work of others. Experience with personal computers, databases and computerized record-keeping systems may be required depending on work area. A valid Class 5 Manitoba driver=s license required. Depending on position and area of work, a valid Class 3 Manitoba driver=s license with air brake endorsement may be required. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Skills and Abilities Good knowledge of modern methods and techniques. Ability to keep accurate records, make calculations, compile and summarize records and prepare applicable reports. Good oral and written communication skills and ability to relate effectively with students, staff and the general public. Aptitude for operating, handling and repairing a variety of farm equipment. Good judgment and decision-making skills. Must be familiar with WHMIS, University of Manitoba animal care policies and transportation regulations. Physical Requirements $ Lifting up to 40 kg may be required. $ Will involve shift work or weekend work on a rotating basis. $ Good dexterity and the ability to work in various positions as is required in handling and management of farm livestock and equipment. $ No allergies to livestock or plants and their products. $ Capable of performing the duties as assigned.
