I’m excited to be working with you this year to make it a successful year for all of us. In order to do that we will work together and keep communication between home and school a priority. Below you will find the classroom guidelines, grading policy, and expectations. Overview: Junior High English will be building from skills that you learned the previous year. This will be done through writing for a variety of purposes and to multiple audiences and through literature study. Writing will focus on skills including but not limited to expository, communication, analysis, and research approaches. Readings will include a variety of authors both fiction and non-fiction. Students will participate in whole-class discussion as well as small group and partner. Classroom Rules: Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Safe Classroom Procedures and Expectations: 1. Be prepared: - Come to class on time. - Complete and turn in your work. Incomplete work will be returned to you to completed. 1. Follow directions and class procedures: - Upon entering class, pick up any hand-outs and/or make up work, and start the day’s assignment. - Raise your hand if you need help or have a question or comment. - Clean up after yourself! Class materials must be neatly returned to the appropriate areas before you will be excused. - Wait in your seat to be excused at the end of class. 2. Be Proactive: - If you finish early use the time productively. Silently read your independent novel, review vocabulary or complete unfinished work. 3. Respect others: - Show respect for the rights, feelings, and property of all students and staff. - Use language that is appropriate for the classroom and respectful to those around you 4. Respect yourself: - Take responsibility for your own actions - Be honest. - Always do your own personal best work - Copying of work is unacceptable and will receive a zero Consequences: Attendance/Tardies/Hall Passes: 1. Attendance The attendance and tardy policy in the student handbook will be strictly adhered to. 2. Tardies Being on time is a skill that we all need to have. If you are late, you must obtain a pass from the office to be admitted to class and any work assigned that day is still due for credit. If there is not time during class to discuss your missed work please arrange a time to meet with me later in the day. 3. Hall Passes Please do not ask for a hall pass during the first ten minutes or last 10 minutes of class. Students will be given a pass when necessary and not during direct instruction time. Procedure for make-up work: All make-up work is the responsibility of the student If you are absent on the day when an assignment is due, you are expected to make up the work for credit by the end of the month or grading period, whichever comes first. Upon returning to class check the assignment calendar and collect any handouts from the absent folder(s). All quizzes and test must be made up for credit. Mastery is 70% or higher. You will be allowed two(2) retakes of each test/quiz to achieve mastery. Students will be given reasonable time to make-up class assignments, quizzes, and tests for absences. Grading Policy: A = 90-100% B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D = 60-69% F = 0-59% I’m looking forward to a great year and remember that I’m here to help you succeed.
