CLASS TITLE:
WRITING COACH
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of Faculty Director of the Writing Center, provide any and all appointment
types beyond writing feedback offered by the Writing Center. Assist in developing and
maintaining materials and processes needed for these specialties.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Provide instructional assistance and advice to students regarding writing assignments
across the disciplines; consult with students in the following one-to-one appointment types:
Parts of Speech, Reading, Online, Transfer, Scholarship. [E]
2.
Run Supplemental Instruction small group sessions as assigned.
3.
Assist with the training of new Writing Coaches and student workers who provide writing
consultations. [E]
4.
Observe new Writing Coaches and student workers and provide feedback. [E]
5.
Develop and produce instructional materials and ensure they are maintained at various
campuses.
6.
Develop and present workshops in person and online.
7.
Research online resources in specializations and provide that information to students and to
Instructional Writing Center Assistants for the website.
8.
Assist Instructional Writing Center Assistants in the design of publicity materials for
specialized services.
9.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Basic college-level subject matter of the assigned subject area.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
Materials used in assigned subject area.
District organization, operations, policies and objectives.
ABILITY TO:
Work independently with little direction.
Provide instructional assistance to students.
Perform basic college-level work in the assigned academic field.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Train others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor of Arts degree in the assigned subject
discipline or related field and one year of directly related experience.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Not applicable. While some positions work occasionally with students and temporary help, this
class is not assigned line supervisory responsibility.
CONTACTS:
Students, instructors, public, other departments.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending or stooping; occasional light
lifting, carrying, pulling and/or pushing of objects weighing 35 pounds or less; ability to travel
and/or drive to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business;
ability to work at computer stations for extended periods of time on an as-needed basis,
involving light repetitive use of hands, wrists and forearms.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and
communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups
of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to concentrate on
detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other
responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while
meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in indoor office, instructional lab or classroom environments; subject to frequent
interruptions by individuals in person or by telephone, intermittent exposure to individuals acting
in a disagreeable fashion. May work at any district location or authorized facility during day
and/or evening hours with occasional evenings, and/or weekends on an as-needed basis.
Occasional local travel may be requested.
