CLASS TITLE:
INSTRUCTIONAL WRITING CENTER ASSISTANT
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Faculty Director of the Writing Center, provide instructional support for
the Writing Center; assist in development of instructional materials and preparation and delivery of
training.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Act as liaison at a particular campus location maintaining communication about that location
regarding: scheduling needs, training needs, faculty relationships, materials and publicity
maintenance. Refer issues to the Writing Center Specialist or Faculty Director when
necessary. (E)
2.
Assist in training Writing Coaches and student workers prior to Fall semester. Assess
instructional training needs that arise at location-specific or in content-specific areas. (E)
3.
Assist in designing and maintaining instructional materials for student distribution and update
campus locations such as website, bulletin boards, electronic signage and social media.
4.
Assist in the planning and implementation of instructional events and service projects. (E)
5.
Make referrals to appropriate college services and personnel and communicate with special
programs (EOPS, DSPS, Veterans, Honors, Scholarship, and Transfer Center, etc.) to
develop and maintain inter-department relationships. (E)
6.
Ability to substitute for other Writing Center employees by demonstrating thorough
knowledge of department procedures and roles. Must be able to understand and step into
Writing Coach, Secretary/Clerk II and student worker roles.
7.
Prepare, verify and maintain instructional records and reports; compile requested information
and prepare basic statistical reports; maintain a variety of files. (E)
8.
Provide work direction to Writing Coaches and student workers as assigned.
9.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
District organization, operations, policies and objectives.
College-level English language skills.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Proper methods, materials, and tools used in the Writing Center.
Basic knowledge of specific district site to which assigned.
Oral and written communication skills.
Recordkeeping techniques.
Familiarity with Google Docs.
Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.

ABILITY TO:
Provide instructional assistance to students.
Perform basic college-level work in the assigned academic field.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Operate a variety of office equipment, including computer and appropriate software.
Work independently with little direction.
Train and provide work direction to others.
Maintain records.
Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures and apply them in a variety
of procedural situations.
Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural,
ethnic and disability issues.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and experience equivalent to an Associate of Arts degree and one year of closely
related work experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver license.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student and/or hourly workers.
CONTACTS:
Students, faculty, departmental coworkers.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional light
lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; ability to work at computer, including
repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices; ability to travel to a variety
of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and
communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups
of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to concentrate on
detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other
responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while
meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in an office, instructional lab or classroom environment. Subject to frequent
interruptions by individuals in person or by telephone; intermittent exposure to individuals acting
in a disagreeable fashion. May work at any district location or authorized facility during day,
evening and/or weekend hours. Occasional local travel may be requested.
