CLASS TITLE:
NURSING ASSOCIATE
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Health Services Coordinator, provide health assessment, nursing
treatment, health education and appropriate referral to students and employees; maintain a
variety of health records; follow approved department policy and procedures.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1. Meet individually with students and employees to perform health assessment; perform and
monitor vital signs, and provide appropriate treatment as needed. (E)
2. Triage, and administer first aid; provide initial emergency care according to approved
procedures; respond to campus medical emergencies according to approved procedures.

3. Provide health education for students and employees; make appropriate appointments,
referrals and utilize community health related resources.(E)
4. Provide confidential mental health assessment; schedule students for appointments or
refer as needed. (E)
5. Perform diagnostic testing including TB screening and chest x-ray referral, cholesterol,
blood sugar, hemoglobin, spirometry, vision and hearing, urinalysis, body fat assessment,
and pregnancy. (E)
6. Organize and oversee clinics; prepare students for medical examination by the doctor or
nurse practitioner; assist with treatment and examination as directed. (E)
7. Maintain accurate confidential health records and statistics; record lab work performed and
medications administered; refer international students to approved community resources;
prepare accident, liability and Workers’ Compensation reports as needed; comply with
mandated reporter requirements. (E)
8. Inventory medical supplies regularly; participate in disinfecting and organizing assigned
clinic areas; maintain and clean medical equipment.
9. Participate as a member of the Campus Emergency Response Team; provide backup and
relief for secretarial staff.
10. Perform related duties as assigned.

Perform professional nursing duties at a community college.
Conduct various medical screening tests.
Collect and prepare specimens for lab work.
Appropriately respond to medical emergencies.
Triage patients in the clinic and emergency situations.
Operate a variety of office equipment, including computer and appropriate software.
Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
Administer first aid and initial health care in medical emergencies.
Provide health services information and counseling to students and staff.
Make arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately.
Plan and organize work.
Work independently with little direction.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Registered Nurse degree and two years directly related work experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Current California Registered Nurse's license, valid California driver license, CPR/AED card for
healthcare providers. Course must meet American Heart Association or American Red Cross
guidelines.

CONTACTS:
Coworkers, faculty, staff, other department personnel, outside agencies, physician, nurse
practitioner, physician assistant, and/or paramedics.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Frequent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional lifting and carrying of objects
weighing up to 50 pounds; ability to work at computer, including repetitive use of computer
keyboard, mouse or other control devices; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off
campus as needed to conduct district business.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and
communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups of
individuals from diverse backgrounds including children on a regular, on-going basis; ability to
work effectively on a variety of tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and
changing priorities; ability to effectively negotiate, mediate and resolve conflicts with and among
their contacts; ability to appropriately respond to emergency situations on an as-needed basis.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and
communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups
of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to concentrate on
detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other
responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while
meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily medical office environment; frequent exposure to hazardous materials such as
bloodborne pathogens, bacteria, virus, solvents and other toxic chemicals and substances which
require use of personal protection including protective safety eyewear, gloves or clothing; subject
to frequent interruptions by individuals in person or by telephone, intermittent exposure to
individuals acting in a disagreeable fashion; may be required to work at any district location
during day and/or evening hours including occasional weekends on an as-needed basis.
