MIRACOSTA COLLEGE CLASS TITLE: HEALTH EDUCATION PROMOTION/NURSING ASSOCIATE BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Health Services Coordinator, provide at either campus, nursing care and health services including testing, nursing assessment and first aid to students and staff; disseminate health services information and provide specialized assistance and counseling regarding individual health needs; maintain a variety of health records; determine health education/promotion needs and develop action plans. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 1. Plan, research, organize and implement health education material and campus health promotion events. Maintain Health Services web site. (E) 2 Maintain liaison with community health resources and campus departments to promote health education. Take on the duties of Blood Drive Chairperson for MCC Blood Drives. (E) 3 Provide confidential in-depth personal health and mental health counseling as appropriate; refer students to physicians, Nurse Practitioner, MFT Interns, clinics, agencies and other health care providers according to established procedures. Schedule students for appointments as appropriate. (E) 4 Provide professional nursing care to sick and injured students and staff; make independent nursing assessments regarding illnesses and emergency situations according to established policies and guidelines. Refer more complex medical problems to the Health Services Coordinator, physician, Nurse Practitioner or other appropriate health professional. (E) 5 Administer first aid; provide initial emergency care according to approved procedures; respond to campus medical emergencies according to approved procedures. (E) 6 Communicate with students, staff and the general public to obtain and provide health related information, make referrals and explain a variety of policies, procedures, rules and regulations concerning health care services. 7 Administer immunization injections, screen for vision and hearing problems and dispense medication according to established procedures. Handle and dispose of hazardous waste as per protocol. (E) 8 Organize and oversee clinics; prepare students for medical examination by the doctor or Nurse Practitioner; assist with treatment and examination as directed. (E) 9 Maintain accurate confidential health records and statistics; record lab work performed and medications administered; provide essential information to appropriate staff. Prepare Accident, Liability and Workers’ Compensation forms as needed. Report suspected abuse, molestation and neglect in accordance with the law. Organize and tabulate statistical reports as needed. 12 Maintain and order all medical clinic supplies. Provide backup and relief for secretarial staff. 13 Provide classroom presentations and demonstrations on health topics as requested by instructors. 14 Serve as resource person for the Allied Health Club. 15 Perform related duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Public Health or equivalent and two years directly related work experience. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: A valid, current California Registered Nurse’s license; CPR/AED card for healthcare providers; course must meet American Heart Association or American Red Cross guidelines and a valid California driver license.
