BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Senior Business Consultant or in the absence of the Director, the
Business Consultant is charged with diagnosing problems and responding to those problems by recommending possible solutions, training, one-on-one consulting and other resources to owners of small businesses. The Business Consultant will prescribe a scope of work to address small business needs and help ensure that the Small Business Development Center achieves results that create economic impact in the service area.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1. Provide in-depth one-on-one consulting, particularly in the area of business planning, management and financial analysis to business owners.
2. Assist the Senior Business Consultant in planning and promoting the economic growth of small businesses in North San Diego County.
3. Travel to off-site locations on a regular basis in varying sections of North County to provide consulting services.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Familiarity with the U.S. Small Business Administration and other providers of assistance to small businesses, especially those located in the Greater San Diego area.
Marketing techniques and strategies.
Financing and financial management approaches.
Resources to research current laws and regulations affecting small businesses in California.
Business counseling in the areas of business planning, management, financial analysis and access to both traditional and alternative forms of capital.
Effective use of the Internet.
ABILITY TO:
Identify barriers that owners of small businesses encounter.
Conduct situational analysis of small businesses and develop scopes of work for clients.
Effect change in the client’s perspective and business knowledge.
Work independently under supervision.
Work cooperatively with persons from diverse, cultural backgrounds.
Write clear and concise reports.
Use the computer to effectively to complete required tasks.
Meet schedules and timelines.
Plan and organize work.
Work confidently with discretion.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Baccalaureate degree in Business
Management, Administration, Economics, Finance or related field and have at least two years experience providing Business Consulting.

SBDC business clients, coworkers, and the public.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Intermittent to frequent standing and walking with occasional light lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; ability to ride and/or drive to a variety of locations on- and off-campus as needed to conduct District business.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, ongoing basis; ability to work effective under pressure on a variety of tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in busy indoor environments; subject to frequent travel to various locations to conduct work during day and/or evening hours including weekends on an as-needed basis.
