BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Director, Small Business Development Center, the Senior Business
Consultant is charged with diagnosing problems and determining the consulting, training and/or specialized needs of small businesses; prescribing a scope of work to address those needs; supervising and assigning consultants to client cases; monitoring and evaluating consultant services and consultants; and, providing advice and assistance to small business owners and management.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES :
1. Provide in-depth one-on-one business counseling, particularly in the areas of business planning, management, and financial analysis to small business owners.

Identify, manage, and schedule program consultants.
Participate in identification of needs for training programs for inclusion in annual proposal. Design and deliver training programs as required.
4. Create an environment to increase the economic impact of small businesses in North
San Diego county.
5. Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Small Business Administration and Trade & Commerce Agency services and programs.
Marketing techniques.
Financing and financial management techniques.
Laws affecting small businesses in California.
Consulting in the areas of business planning, management and financial analysis.
Principles of effective supervision, evaluation, and training.
Effective use of the Internet.
ABILITY TO:
Learn and interpret laws, rules, and regulations as they apply to small business development.
Coordinate activities for small business development over a broad urban, suburban, and rural locality.
Work independently under supervision.
Work cooperatively with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Give effective oral presentations in both public and private sectors.
Write clear and concise reports, brochures, and other communiques.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Equivalent to Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, or related field and three years of full-time professional experience in small business development or related area.

California driver license.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
SBDC staff and consultants.

CONTACTS:
SBDC business clients, college staff, interns, and the public.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Intermittent to frequent standing and walking with occasional light lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; ability to ride and/or drive to a variety of locations on- and offcampus as needed to conduct District business.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, ongoing basis; ability to work effective under pressure on a variety of tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in busy indoor environments; subject to frequent travel to various locations to conduct work during day and/or evening hours including weekends on an as-needed basis.
Travel is required within the geographical region the North County SBDC serves.
