CLASS TITLE:
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR DEVELOPMENT
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the general direction of the Executive Director, MiraCosta College Foundation and
Development, manage a growing portfolio of current and potential donors; manage and develop
an annual giving program at the $1,000 to $10,000 levels; create engagement through
recognition societies as well as manage and implement other fundraising efforts to include
securing event sponsorships, Medal of Honor scholarships and other special projects as
assigned.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1. Identify, qualify, cultivate and solicit current and potential donors. Will manage a growing
portfolio of donors and prospects (individuals and corporations) and is expected to be
comfortable making cold calls, skilled at building relationships and at ease in talking with
people about gifts to the college. (E)
2. Work with individuals as well as local and regional business representatives to launch and
grow giving groups to the college at the $1,000 - $10,000 levels. Facilitates introductions
between corporate representatives with the college president, other administrative leaders,
or faculty member(s) and then working to develop partnership plans that would include
private support to the college. This may include gifts for the development and/or
enhancement of academic programs, corporate underwriting, and/or membership in the
Business Roundtable.
3. Manage and develop the President’s Circle recognition program, the college’s $1,000+
giving club. Responsible for developing a plan that will detail a program budget, create
systems for identifying, cultivating and soliciting donors, develop collateral communication
materials, manage and support volunteer participation, and compile an annual evaluation of
program effectiveness and recommendations for improvement. The incumbent will
regularly interact with donor club members, communicate at least periodically via email or
mail and regularly update the President’s Circle web pages. (E)
4. Manage and implement other fundraising programs as assigned. (E)
5. Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects, which includes moving prospects from
identification to solicitation to stewardship. (E)
6. Coordinate and collaborate with college faculty and staff in identifying college programs that
could benefit from private support. Collaborate with the appropriate individuals so that
college programs are presented to potential donors – individuals, foundations and
corporations – in a manner most appealing to potential funders.
7. Plan, design, develop and implement (or manage as appropriate) email, mail and
telemarketing efforts aimed at educating various college constituencies about the College’s

most recent activities and accomplishments and raising private support from alumni and
friends.
8. Serve as a contributing writer for the Development/Foundation publications and Web site.
9. Actively participate in the appropriate fundraising committees of the MiraCosta College
Foundation Board, effectively engaging and partnering with board members in the fundraising
process. This will include preparing board members to effectively represent the college and
the foundation by providing them with information about potential donors, coordinating
strategies and approaches, and actively following up with board members to ensure that
activities are properly recorded. (E)
10. Utilizing the Prospect Management/CRM System, will record approaches to prospective
donors, develop and record strategies and plan future actions for donor stewardship,
cultivation and solicitation.
11. Provide strategic input on the overall event messaging/theme and logistics. Responsible for
oversight of the development and execution of donor events ensuring that the events are
conducted according to the highest standards of professionalism, and that each activity
contributes to the goals of the Development and Foundation office. This may include a
fundraising event/gala including working with the department’s Event Specialist and a
committee of volunteers; solicit sponsorships and sell tickets to ensure the events
fundraising success. (E)
12. Serve on other foundation board committees or college committees as appropriate.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Equivalent to Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of
directly related experience in fundraising/fund development.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver license.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Temporary workers and student workers as needed.
CONTACTS:
Alumni, District faculty, staff and students, Foundation board members, grant agencies,
business and community leaders, and the general public.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional light
lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; ability to work at computer, including
repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices; ability to travel to a variety
of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and
communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups
of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to concentrate on
detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other
responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while
meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.

Primarily works in an office environment. Subject to public contact and frequent interruptions
by individuals in person or by telephone, intermittent exposure to individuals acting in a
disagreeable fashion. May work at any district location or authorized facility during day and/or
evening hours with occasional evenings, and/or weekends on an as-needed basis. Occasional
local travel may be requested.
