submitted.
Announcements: Save the date for the COEHS holiday party on Dec 10. It will be held on the
3rd floor at 4 pm. All offices can close at that time. Our doctoral student, Brenda Skeete will be
catering for us by providing a pasta bar with fixings and desserts. Please join us and share some
holiday cheer with your colleagues.
Congratulations and happy retirement to Dr. Jan Humphrey and Dr. Sandra Gupton. Karen
Patterson reminded faculty to come upstairs at 4 pm today to wish Jan Humphrey farewell at her
retirement party.
Two Faculty Support Grants of $1,500 each were awarded to: 1) Christian Winterbottom, Liz
Gregg and Matt Olhson, 2) Sherry Shaw, Laura Jackson and Linda Connelly.
Wanda Lastrapes said the Jacksonville Teacher Residency has added staff and they were able to
move Emily Putnam into a full-time position as a recruitment and outreach coordinator and
added Sarah Smith as a program assistant through the Americore grant.
Sue Syverud said the APC graduate International Education Certificate has passed so it’s a good
idea to use this as a marketing tool. Try to encourage these opportunities for our students. This
certificate will show on their transcripts too.
Caroline Guardino invited faculty (members and non-members) to the UFF Holiday Happy Hour
today at the Boathouse from 2:30 – 5:30 pm. There will be gifts and prizes so please join us.
Dean Search Update: Forty-four candidates have applied to date and the committee has invited
eight candidates for skype interviews. Faculty received the email with CVs and they can be
found at this link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/dpsjykqsebrplug/AACmN7h_yNWSYAVinAqheq_a?dl=0. Talk to your department representatives to voice your feedback. Please do this
before they come to town.
Standing Committee Reports:
Executive Committee - If you have an issue you want discussed by the Executive Committee
please send an email to Sue Syverud with your minutes and cc Deirdre Meehan for the printed
version. Remember to upload committee minutes to the O drive as well.
Undergraduate Standards and Curriculum Committee – no report.
Graduate Standards and Curriculum Committee – no report.
Student Issues Committee – no report.
Personnel Committee – no report.
Technology Committee – Laura Jackson was invited to Coggin College of Business technology
committee meeting and heard concerns with blackboard issues in the beginning of the semester.
There is no tracking system for faculty to find out about those issues so CIRT is working on a
better tracking issues’ system. CIRT wants to know if we want extended hours, early morning,
late evening or weekends. Laura Jackson will send out a brief survey about this to get your
feedback. CIRT is available by email on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 pm at
cirtlab@unf.edu. Upon successful completion of all seminar activities and assignments,
participants in TOL7100 will receive a $2000 stipend and certification to develop and deliver
online courses at UNF.
Long Range Planning Committee – Dan Dinsmore said after their departmental meeting they
decided to put forward four or five concepts for the conceptual framework. We’d like an ongoing
conversation about the conceptual framework. Dan Dinsmore suggested we have a larger
conversation with all faculty. Jen Kane added that we will facilitate a retreat or whatever we
need so we can hurry this along since it affects curriculum.
Dean’s Report:
It was brought up at the Executive Committee that the Student Issues report didn’t include
minors. It was suggested to have a survey specifically for our minors. Bess Wilson will followup.
Megan Schramm-Possinger talked about the news we received from a FLDOE State conference
call. They are publishing grades for each initial teacher preparation program based on these
APPR scores. Grades 4 – 1 (4 high, 1 low) based on retention, jobs, VAM scores and ethnic
makeup. FLDOE will send a press release soon and Marsha Lupi will forward the email to
faculty. If you have questions about it, ask Megan Schramm-Possinger or Marsha Lupi. A
discussion ensued and since the results are misleading it was suggested to get a taskforce
together to provide talking points in a word document.
Search Updates:
 Chair/Associate Professor/Professor, Childhood Education, Literacy & TESOL position 3 candidates were identified for on-campus interviews. The 3rd candidate will interview
in January.




Assistant Professor, Elementary Social Studies Education – the committee plans to phone
interview 7 candidates and bring them in January.
Instructor, Childhood Education, Literacy and TESOL – the position has been posted and
the committee will meet the first week of classes to review applications.
Program Director & Associate/Full Professor, Educational Leadership – the committee
plans to have skype interviews on Monday, December 14.
Assistant/Associate Professor, ASL/English Interpreting – only 1 applicant has applied so
far.
FTCE: We supported our students by holding FTCE workshops taught by Kelly Scott, Megan
Schramm-Possinger and Cathy O’Farrell. Megan reported that 16 people haven’t graduated yet
from last semester and only 45% of Elementary Ed has passed this semester. This is a crisis – we
have a few choices, web resources and workshops but how can we integrate this prep into our
courses? How can we move forward to help our students pass it? A discussion ensued. We’ve
put certification testing resources on our homepage and we want your feedback. We are happy to
add your suggestions for resources. Send Nick Eastham book resources and direct your students
to these resources. John Kemppainen reminded faculty that students need to take the test early
because it takes seven weeks for the score. Action plan - faculty need to act on this.
Spring Enrollment/Registration: Remind our undergraduates to register early.
Recruitment: We had Cathy Cole in Marketing and Publications design a recruiting flyer for
teacher education programs and Kelly Scott will be handing it out in Orlando at the Future
Educators of America State Conference. Please look it over and provide your feedback.
Alumni Initiatives: We are looking at new ways to engage alumni into a culture of giving. Nicole
Pece is finding out how other universities do this.
DEAC: The community pays a fee to be on the dean’s council. We look to them to talk about
what they think we are doing that’s wonderful and how they can assist us in funding resources.
They love the roundtables where they get to meet our faculty and these are the kinds of
relationships we want to build with the community.
Shout Outs:
 Caroline Guardino hosted a Celebration of Life event for a student we lost and it was
very well done and really showcased the EDIE department.
 Thanks to John Kemppainen for being an advocate for Belize. University of Belize is so
excited they are sending three of their colleagues to COEHS in February.
 Roddenberry fellowship was a good event and Carolyne Ali-Khan, Anne Swanson, Nile
Stanley, Katrina Hall and Kris Webb were mentors there.
Other Business: none.
Adjournment: The meeting of Friday, December 4th adjourned at 1:40 pm and the next meeting
will be on Friday, January 8, 2016.
