Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 12:20 p.m. Approval of Minutes: The minutes of the September 4, 2015 meeting were approved as submitted. Announcements: Nile Stanley is holding a session on Tuesday, October 6 at 5 pm in building 1, room 2002 for graduate students. It is titled “How to Publish in Graduate School” and is open to all majors. Marsha Lupi communicated to faculty that there will be an Education Career Exploration Open House event on Saturday, October 3 from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in building 57. We are expecting 59 students with their families so approximately 150 people will be attending. Marsha thanked Chris Janson, Dwyane Kohn, Kelly Scott, Jade Yuen, and John Kemppainen for attending tomorrow’s open house. Nile Stanley mentioned that Folio Weekly announced “best of” contest winners and UNF won best local college. Sophie Maxis encouraged faculty to participate in Earle Traynham’s visitation program for the dorms to help make UNF a welcoming place. Carolyne Stone announced that the First Lady will be coming to UNF on November 2, 3 and 4. More information will be forthcoming. Nile Stanley reminded faculty about John Ouyang’s Confucius Institute hosting an international conference at UNF on October 23, 24, and 25. Scholars will be coming from all over the United States and China and the conference is free to faculty and students. Betty Bennett said a 2015 EPI graduate, Alyssa Knight, was just named “Teacher of the Year” for Bridge to Success High School 2015-2016. Dean Search: Luke Cornelius reported that the committee had their first meeting last week. They are updating last year’s announcement and hoping to get it out quickly so people can take it to conferences. Kristi Sweeney communicated on behalf of the Executive Committee a request for the dean search committee to take a look at the bylaws and make sure the requirements of the dean follow our bylaws. Standing Committees: Executive Committee - Sophie Maxis confirmed the committee members were all voted in and all positions were filled. Sophie reminded committees to email Sue Syverud their newly elected chairs. Personnel Committee –report was emailed to Sue Syverud. Long Range Planning Committee - Kim Cheek reported the committee will meet Wednesday afternoon and will select a chair at that meeting. Student Issues Committee – Bess Wilson reported they were waiting for the list of members before setting up their first meeting. Technology Committee – Laura Jackson reported the committee met yesterday and Laura Jackson was elected chair. Undergraduate Standards and Curriculum Committee - Wanda Hedrick said the committee met and elected Katrina Hall as the chair. Graduate Standards and Curriculum Committee - no report. Jennifer Kane suggested the college bylaws be sent to new faculty to review and keep bylaws in mind during the dean search. The bylaws were already sent in the meeting reminder. Laura Jackson noticed the bylaws are missing the Technology Committee under the Standing Committee section. Laura was advised to send the change to Sue Syverud and Sue will correct it. Reminder: Each standing committee has charges written in the bylaws - follow your charge and check to make sure your committee is up to date on the academic policies. Department Chair Reports: none. Dean’s Report: Shout Outs: Confucius Institute’s musical event last night was really wonderful and 1300 people attended. Visitors from Belize visited our Professional Development Schools – Thank you to Sue Syverud, John Kemppainen and Debbie Reed. It was a very successful trip with the Belizeans here and was very well received. Military workshop was very successful - kudos to all that participated. Scholarship dinner was a very good event and thanked Nicole Pece and Chris Slack for their hard work planning the event. LSCSM: shout out to Carolyn Stone who was recently awarded the distinguished professor award. Also, Matt Ohlson and Anne Swanson are building a partnership with NEFEC to build another cohort for principal preparation which would involve summer community based learning workshops. EDIE: was granted a site visit for accreditation. FSE: Bess Wilson just returned from the Florida Association of Gifted Conference and it was fabulous. CELT: congratulations to Alison McLarty who was promoted to Office Manager for the Confucius Institute. Field: Cathy O’Farrell finished the placements. Search Updates: Educational Leadership, Doctoral Program Director position just got posted. Elementary Education Social Studies position is currently waiting for approval from the VP office. Chair, Childhood Education, Literacy, and TESOL position has co-chairs Chris Janson and Lunetta Williams. It is posted and if you want a flier please email Lunetta Williams or Jenny Neidhardt. Dean Search was already discussed. Jennifer Kane explained the FTCE workshops which will start on October 19. We will concentrate on the GK and the K-6 and will provide workshops, study guides, study groups and resources. Thanks to Kelly Scott and Cathy O’Farrell for leading the workshops. If anyone would like to provide input, please let us know. Writing group – Shut Up and Write will meet right after this meeting. Faculty Support Grant application has a link on the Dean’s Office website. It’s due on October 30. We have 2 awards for $1,500. COEHS Scholarships and Fellowships – please make your students aware of scholarships and fellowships even if you have to call them to apply. We would love to make these more competitive. It was suggested to set-up a table before the deadline, come into classes to tell them about it or have an awardee say how beneficial it was. Application deadline is Friday, January 23, 2016 at 5 pm. Undergraduate Core Review – There is a State regulation of 120 hrs. per week so Jennifer Kane brought people together to see how best to handle this. We decided to make changes in the core based on the conceptual framework but our current framework is the IMPACT statement. The task of coming up with an updated conceptual framework statement has been given to the Long Range Planning Committee. It was recommended that new faculty attend the Faculty Association meetings held on the first Thursday of each month. Megan Possinger thanked faculty for clicking on ECATS. We have to report to the State soon and the timeframe is from May 15, 2013 – May 15, 2014. They want to know what degree our students met these uniform core curriculum matrix and any new curricular matrices. If your curriculum has changed, send the changes to Megan for 2012 – 2015. Nick Eastham is helping Megan with the repository so we can refer to old data. You will probably receive an email from Megan soon to find out who the program faculty and directing teachers were and what the school staff qualifications were. Indicator 3.5A narrative is provided describing the formal annual evaluation process including how data are analyzed and disseminated. A description of how decisions are made based on the data analyses is provided, including specified elements. Megan referred faculty to a green handout that showed a good example of how to evaluate this with goals, measures, results and changes. Megan is open to suggestions and encourages you to email her with any suggestions. Marsha Lupi explained the Faculty International Support Grant. It will help fund part of your travel to find a partner school in another country. The additional money will help pay your bills if taking students overseas with you. CUEP – We are inactivating it in December since we do not have the funds to keep it. Thanks to Mary Rose for her work there. Reminder: Please support the 26-in-26 Annual Giving Campaign. Director of Development - Nicole Pece has a lot of great ideas and wants to move us forward. You can help by going to Nicole with your inspiring stories, your needs, your grant ideas, your lab school ideas or programs. Put them in writing and send to Nicole or meet with her. There are naming opportunities available that range from faculty offices, conference rooms, technology and sign language labs, to department suites. John Kemppainen said the three lower level education prerequisites are coming up for review again. In two weeks, John will be in Tallahassee attending a committee meeting about this. EPI uses the conference room on Saturdays and reminded faculty to reset the room to a traditional classroom style. Save the date for Saturday, November 7 to enjoy Springfield’s Porch Fest.
