CXC Manager’s Status Report Chandra User Committee Meeting Roger J. Brissenden 25 June 2002 Program Level Status • • • • • • • • • Spacecraft continues to perform superbly and operations continue to be routine. No significant spacecraft hardware problems or safe modes have occurred since last report. Flight software patch to mitigate EPHIN hardware failure flag glitch running SCS 107. 827 Cycle 4 proposals (817 GO, 10 GTO) submitted by deadline of 3/15/02. Peer Review held on schedule June 18-20. Plan agreed to with MSFC and HQ on adding resources in the Ed/Outreach area to provide additional emphasis on SSUs. CXC Quarterly review 4/23/02. No major actions resulted from the review. MSFC Independent Annual Review to be held 9/5/02. Contract change in work to direct SAO to perform call for proposals in place of NRA – similar to HST model. CXC Contract extension proposal for 11-months from 9/30/02 to 8/31/03 in final sign-off with MSFC. MSFC is pursuing a JOFOC approach for contract post 8/31/03. Second 5-year budget level briefing given to HQ as part of POP-02. No significant near-team budget or staffing issues. Out-year profile in work with HQ. 25 June 2002 CXC Status Report/CUC Page 2 Items from January 02 CUC • “Occasionally a few datasets are delivered well beyond the mean lag of 7 days. We suggest that each OBSID has a built-in alarm so that the appropriate scientists are informed when an OBSID has been unduly delayed.” The archive group has installed a script which checks the automated processing (AP) status for observations which have been in the queue for a week or more. The duty scientist is notified of all such observations. In addition DS has implemented monthly manual checks of the AP status tables for observations which have been received but for which processing has not completed. • “We recommend that more channels be opened by which either the Director or the CXC Outreach office can learn of potentially interesting results. Possibilities include charging CUC members to take some responsibility for identifying potentially appropriate science results and sensitizing PIs of successful large proposals of this issue.” The CXC has reached agreement on a plan with MSFC and HQ to increase the resources in the Education and Public Outreach area. An important task for the new resources will be to address this issue. 25 June 2002 CXC Status Report/CUC Page 3 Operations • Nominal Spring 2002 eclipse season. • Patch up-linked to increase glitch counters and mitigate EPHIN hardware failure glitch counter trips of SCS 107 (second occurrence on 4/2/02 however EPHIN hardware is nominal and cause traced to subtle timing condition). • Successful test of bright earth constraint limitation. Expected to lead to reduction of the 20 degree constraint yielding more flexible scheduling. • 6 executions of SCS 107 due to high solar activity, 1 assessed as due to EPHIN hardware failure glitch. – No ACIS CTI degradation above expectations. • Anomalies – None. • Hosted a number of visits or discussions with other mission teams: – NGST, SIRTF, Kepler, SIM, HST (July). 25 June 2002 CXC Status Report/CUC Page 4 Operations • Load interrupt TOOs Date 3/3/02 3/11/02 3/12/02 3/28/02 4/5/02 4/5/02 5/10/02 6/3/02 Target NGC 4388 RX J170930.2-2639 SN2002B0 GRB020321 GRB020405 XTE J1751-305 XTE J0929-314 GRB020531 Request 1 day 3 days 3 days 3 days 1 day 3 day 3 days 3 day • Operations Ground System Updates Date 2/27/02 5/2/02 5/2/02 6/12/02 25 June 2002 Version ONLS 3.8.2 OFLS 9.2B GRETA 1.2.2 OFLS 9.3 Change New front end processor file interface Major update of momentum management Plot bug fix Interface to AGASC 1.5 (starcat update) CXC Status Report/CUC Page 5 MUPS Fuel Usage MUPS fuel remaining (Lb mass) 57.2 Avg usage rate = 1.31 lbm/yr Yrs remaining ~ 44.5 (MUPS fuel only) ~ 143.8 (MUPS + IPS) 57.0 56.8 56.6 56.4 56.2 56.0 55.8 55.6 May01 Jun01 25 June 2002 Jul01 Aug01 Sep01 Oct01 Nov01 Dec01 Jan02 CXC Status Report/CUC Feb02 Mar02 Apr02 Page 6 MUPS Warm Start Count 350 300 MUPS Warm Starts 250 10 year Qual Warm Starts 15 year Qual Warm Starts Actual Warm Starts 200 150 100 50 0 0.00 0.25 0.50 0.75 1.00 1.25 1.50 1.75 2.00 2.25 2.50 2.75 3.00 Mission Elapsed Time (Years) 25 June 2002 CXC Status Report/CUC Page 7 Scheduled Observing Efficiency 0.80 0.70 Scheduled Efficiency 0.60 0.50 0.40 0.30 0.20 0.10 0.00 May-01 Jun-01 25 June 2002 Jul-01 Aug-01 Sep-01 Oct-01 Nov-01 Dec-01 CXC Status Report/CUC Jan-02 Feb-02 Mar-02 Apr-02 Page 8 Cumulative Observations for NRA-3 Cumulative Observations for NRA-3 Cumulative observing time (ks) 25,000 20,000 15,000 Non-cal approved Non-cal scheduled 10,000 Cal sched 5,000 0 Nov-02 Oct-02 Sep-02 Aug-02 Jul-02 CXC Status Report/CUC Jun-02 May-02 Apr-02 Mar-02 Feb-02 Jan-02 Dec-01 Nov-01 25 June 2002 Page 9 Data Systems • Data processing – Average time from observation to data delivery has been maintained at approximately a week • Data System Software Releases (major) Date 2/6/02 3/22/02 6/14/02 25 June 2002 Release Content includes DS 6.6 NRA4 Budget software WebChaSeR fixes, MTA alerts DS 6.7 New SUN cc compiler SI mode, data base and HRC processing updates DS 6.8 Solaris 8 port of data system. CXC Status Report/CUC Page 10 Data Delivery Effectiveness 5.4 DATA DELIVERY EFFECTIVENESS Data delivery effectiveness = time from observation to data accessibility announced to user via automatic or custom processing. Reported for GO, GTO and TOO observations with delivered data (excludes calibration observations and nonastronomical measurements). Valid as of 8 May 2002. Requirements: The CXC is required to deliver data to observers within 7 days of the end of an observation. This is understood to refer to the time from receipt of data at the Operations Command Center (OCC). The Deep Space Network is required to deliver data to the OCC within 24 hours of a data transfer from the spacecraft.
