Program Management
– Successfully passed the 6 year milestone on July 23, 2005
– Budget: In FY05 NASA reduced CXC funding about 5% below the level of the
POP05 plan. We absorbed the decrease through stretchout of some activities,
retiming of subcontract funding, personnel attrition, and other spending reductions.
CXC operations were not substantially affected, but we remain sensitive to any
future NASA cuts or increases in SAO overhead rates.
– Staffing: Approximately 5 FTE decrease through planned reductions and attrition.
– Facilities: OCC. Draper Labs has completed remodeling work at the OCC. The
former conference room and 5 offices were eliminated. A new conference room
was built, and the ACIS equipment has been relocated to the TST room. Operations
have not been affected.
– Facilities: Move to Cambridge Discovery Park. The CXC Data System group
(currently in Harvard Square offices) and three EPO personnel (now at Porter
Exchange & OCC) will move 12/2/05 to new leased space about 1.5 miles
northwest of 60 Garden Street. To minimize impact on mission operations, critical
DS software will be released prior to the move.

• Spacecraft
–
Continues to operate extremely well overall
–
Nominal passage through summer 2005 eclipses; uneventful passages
through Perseid (8/12) and Draconid (10/10) meteor showers
–
Patched Flight Software to allow using HRC in lieu of EPHIN for radiation
sensing (corrected a bug in the previous patch); patched On-Board
Computer for SCS 107 and 84 (improved safety for observations at high
sun angles)
–
ACA dark current calibrations 3/11, 7/10, 9/4
–
Anomalies:
– ACIS threshold crossing plane latched up; was cleared routinely
– After an unexpected radiation safing event, the LETG remained partially
inserted due to a low-probability timing condition. A workaround was
developed to avoid future occurrences.
– Side A of ACIS Digital Electronics Assembly (DEA-A) powered off
spontaneously. The event was similar to two instances of Digital Processor
Assembly shutdown over 6 years; it is assumed to have resulted from a single
event upset due to a cosmic ray. Standard procedures mitigate the effect.

• Mission Planning
– Temperature control requirements – keeping propulsion line warm and
EPHIN cool – resulted in added constraints on mission planning
– SCS107 ran 7 times due to high radiation events (includes major event in
September and unexpected August timing anomaly); required replans
– 9 load interrupt TOOs:

• Science Instruments and Calibration
–
Operating extremely well overall
–
Decided not to bake out ACIS; will review decision annually
–
Changed default aimpoint based on motion of HRM optical axis relative
to the instrument module
–
Made significant calibration updates in preparation for Reprocessing 3;
new, time-dependent trap map for Charge Transfer Inefficiency
– 2005 Calibration Workshop will be held 10/31-11/1
• OCC
–
Transitioned from serial GSFC interface to the Deep Space Network to a
direct T1 connection (TCP/IP) to JPL
–
Migration of ground system software from SGI to Linux is nearing
completion
– Released 2 Online System versions and 4 Offline System version in support of Linux
migration
– Promotion to operations is scheduled for 22 November

• Data Processing
–
Automatic processing is current; data delivery averages <36 hours from
end of observation to delivery to user
– Nearing start of third over-all data reprocessing (Repro 3)
–
–
–
–
Completed all data preparation
Completed and tested scripts for automatic operation
Will use Data System release 7.6.4 after completion of testing
