Being African in America
Aminata Cairo and Weedie Braimah
Anthropology aims to uncover the human story through techniques that allow the researcher to
personally connect with people and their stories. Weedie Braimah, the son of a Ghanaian
master musician came to the United States at a young age. Searching for his African and musical
heritage, Weedie executed his own anthropological research since age nine, connecting with
African master musicians. He used his gained knowledge to develop into a master musician
himself, and to promote his art in the Saint Louis area and throughout the United States. In his
music and teachings he stresses the African heritage, while honoring the American context.
