Earth Science 8th Grade Advanced
Grading Policy
Your grades for each marking period will be computed based on the following percentages:
Exams………………………………………………………………………………..50%
Quizzes………………………………………………………………………………20%
Labs………………………………………………………………………………….20%
Homework…………………………………………………………………………...10%
Homework:
When a homework assignment is given it is due the very next day of school. You will be allowed one day to
make up a missing homework if you were absent or simply did not have it in class. It will not be accepted after
the one day grace period.
Class Participation:
Class participation is an important factor in your success in this course. It is important to ask questions during
class. This allows me to see areas where you may need help. I expect everyone to join in discussions and get
involved in the lesson because class is only boring if you make it.
Supplies and Notebook Setup:
In your binder you must have the following sections:
-
Exams and quizzes
-
Handouts
-
Review sheets
-
Earth Science Reference Tables
At the end of the marking period you may empty out the first three sections and keep them in a folder at home.
You also need to have a pencil case that fits in a binder and in it you must have the following:
-
2 pencils and 2 pens
- calculator
-
“white out”
- pencil sharpener
-
a small clear ruler
Extra Credit:
Extra points are given in the form of Diva Dollars. You may earn a Diva Dollar by asking or answering
insightful questions or volunteering for extra classroom duties. Diva Dollars may be used to receive credit for a
missed homework (no more than two per week) or they can be saved up to add onto a test or quiz (no more than
five Diva Dollars may be used for extra points).
Lab Assignments:
According to the New York State Board of Regents students must complete a minimum of thirty (30) passing
lab assignments in order to qualify to take the regents examination in June. Failure to complete labs will result
in being barred from the exam and you will have to repeat the full year. Summer school in another district is not
possible for those without the lab requirement. Labs are to be completed in class and are to never leave the
classroom.
Chapter Outlines
Students will be assigned a chapter to read and outline to prepare for the upcoming lessons. The format will be
given to each student at a later date. These outlines must be typed, double-spaced and in 12-point font and
students will be allowed to use them on their chapter introduction quizzes. The exact pages and subtopics will
be posted on my webpage on the school’s website.
