Social Security Card Requirement for Hiring Non-Resident Aliens The federal government has added a process to the issuance of Social Security Cards by the Social Security Administration (SSA). For non-resident aliens, applications for a Social Security card will be forwarded to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) for review. The higher education community has been informed that this may slow the process of receiving a Social Security Card. In light of this new federal process, WVU will be temporarily altering its policy and procedure (for student nonresident alien employees only) related to requiring all new employees to present their Social Security Card before commencing employment. For student non-resident alien employees, proof that the employee has applied for a Social Security Card will allow the employee to be put on the payroll and paid. This waiver of the requirement (for student non-resident alien employees only) to present a Social Security Card is in place until September 15, 2002. After that time, all employees will be required to present a Social Security Card to commence employment with the University. Employees hired between the date of this memo and September 15, 2002 will be required to present a copy of their Social Security Card to the Research & Tax Accounting – Tax Department by November 15, 2002. Student employees failing to present a Social Security Card will be prevented from pre-registering for Spring 2003 classes and will be required to cease employment with the University. If you have any questions regarding this memo, please contact Jerome Jackson in the Research & Tax Accounting – Tax Department at (304) 296 -4002 ext. 2438 or by email at tax@mail.wvu.edu.
