SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN CONSTRUCTION

ABSTRACT: This paper presents an additional challenge for engineers to deal with
the aspect of Sustainable Development in Construction. The role of Quality and
Sustainability are explored during the life cycle of construction projects together with
the measure of success. The philosophy and principles of Total Quality Management
(TQM) are discussed.
The major steps to be considered for sustainable development are highlighted. The
creations of Al-Azhar Park along with the development of Darb Al-Ahmar district of
Historic Cairo are reviewed as a case study to illustrate the various concepts used for
the sustainability of projects in construction.
