Description
Master Syllabi are developed by the senior faculty in each business discipline. This Master Syllabus must be used as the basis for developing the
instructor syllabus for this course, which must also comply with the content specifications outlined in the Troy University Faculty Handbook.
The objectives included on this Master Syllabus must be included among the objectives on the instructor’s syllabus, which may expand upon the
same as the instructor sees fit. The statement of purpose seeks to position the course properly within the curriculum and should be consulted by
faculty as a source of advisement guidance. Specific choice of text and other details are further subject to Program Coordinator guidance.

An introduction to the basics of risk management, the application of risk management techniques
to commercial and personal risk management problems, insurance regulation, and the legal
principles underlying insurance personal property and liability insurance contracts.
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Define risk, risk management, insurance, and the risk management process.
2. Identify the fundamental types of risk exposure and the alternative methods of
dealing with risk.
3. Explain the requisites of insurable risk from the standpoint of the insurer and from
the standpoint of the insured.
4. Discuss the benefits and costs of insurance to society.
5. Explain the legal environment of insurance and specific legal concepts and
terminology related to the insurance industry.
6. Explain specific insurance contract provisions related personal insurance contracts.
Purpose
To introduce the principles of risk management and insurance and how they apply to
personal risk management problems.
