Step 1 Pleural Effusion at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Saudi Arabia This study is aimed at identifying the etiology, clinical presentation and diagnostic modalities of pleural effusion in patients admitted to medical wards at King Abdul Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah. The study included all cases of pleural effusion admitted to the medical ward of the hospital during the period between January 1997 to December 1999. A total of 62 patients were diagnosed to have pleural effusion with a mean age of 46 years, with a male to female ratio of 2:1. Dyspnoea, cough and chest pain were the commonest symptoms on presentation. Malignancy and tuberculosis (TB) were the most common etiologies. T.B. was more common in non-Saudis than in Saudis; 77% and 23% respectively. No cause could be found in 10 out of 62 patients (16%) in whom empirical treatment with anti tuberculosis was started with good response. We found that clinical presentation and etiology of pleural effusion in our study was similar to that reported in other developed countries where malignancy and tuberculosis constituted the main causes. عنوان الوثيقة Document ( )Title المستخلص )Abstract( Journal of the Bahrain Medical Society )ISSN( ردمد اسم الدورية )Journal Name( 13 )Volume( المجلد 3 Issue ( العدد )Number سنة النشر Publishing ( )Year )Pages( الصفحات July 2001 :123 إلى 121 : من Step 2 دعــد.د.
