Performance Checklist of vital signs Blood Pressure Student name:Steps 1- Explain procedure to patient 2- Wash hands, provide privacy 3- 12- Place pt. in comfortable position with the arm supported and palm upward. Roll pts gown above elbow. Palpate brachial artery ( arm ),position cuff 2.5 above site of pulsation antecubital ) . Position manometer vertically at eye level. Place the bell of the stetethcope on the brachial artery where the pulse was noted without causing too much pressure. Close valve of pressure bulb clockwise until tight Rapidly inflate cuff to 30mmHg above systolic pressure bulb valve and allow mercury of aneroid manometer gauge to fall at rate of 2 to 3 mmHgsec&note on the manometer the point at which the first sound is heard, record this figure as the systolic pressure. Continue to release the air in the cuff evenly and gradually. Sounds may become a bit(muffled ) Note the reading on the manometer when the last distinct loud sound is heard, record this figure as the diastolic pressure. Allow the remaining air to escape quickly, remove the cuff and clean the equipment. Assist the pt in returning to comfortable position.
