In attendance: Mark Jonas, Greg Valde, Scott Peters, Katie Elliot, Mark

Approval of minutes (from 11/7/12) Approved unanimously on a motion by

Pam Clinkenbeard and seconded by Jenni Petersen.

Items for decision or review:

 Department mission statement (see other side for text) After much discussion there will be a slight wording change – leaving out K-12 and just wording it as outstanding educators My Pettit motioned to approve the change and Mark Schroeder seconded . The motion was approved.

 Process for reviewing courses for substitutions [In order to determine eligibility for course substitution, the department requests copies of syllabi from students.] This will be changed to read – In order to determine eligibility for course substitution, the department may require copies of syllabi from students. This was approved on a Greg Valde motion and ??? second.

 781 instructors (Pam and Scott)

 Portfolio revision proposal (see attached draft and preliminary revision of portfolio handbook)

 Dinner get-together after our college spring forum of 1/17?

Items for discussion

 Curricular process and schedule--Eileen Must get requests in earlier for special courses – Department must approve course proposals before sending forward.

 Global education modules in block classes—Jenni and Anne – Anne and Jenni using block classes to talk about global issues

 Graduate course rotation - Will explore the possibility of EDFOUND 723 will be totally on-line during the spring semester. Possibly

EDFOUND 710 in Fall

 Revised department tenure and promotion standards – Being Reviewed

 Standards and Assessment proposal—Scott and Mark S. – Leap proposal for a fall workshop – Measurement course would be pre-req - Next step is the paperwork - Working on standards from DPI

 Workshop idea—My – 3 – 1 credit workshops 6 weeks long – for fall

2013 – Smartboard use – Google apps and Video training

 Idea for new position – Scott proposed since Melanie mentioned assessment – ½ time data manager and ½ time faculty – TPA

 LEAP assessment—each faculty member provide a narrative/assessment related to LEAP in classes (undergraduate), to be compiled for the required LEAP assessment in the department’s annual report

 Search committee update: phone interviews with semi-finalists completed, on campus interview dates to be determined

 New travel coordinator: John Doudna (replaced Bev Stellling)

 Department representation in LEAP workshop proposals—Scott, Mark S., Beth

Next meeting : Thursday January 17, 2013, after the college event—perhaps a dinner?

Next Wednesday meeting will be February 6, 2013 1-3 in UC 264 . We will be joined between

1:30 and 1:45 by Mai Yer Yang (Intergroup Relations Coordinator) and Cindy Konrad (LGBT

Coordinator), who are visiting departments in order to introduce themselves and discuss their program goals. At the subsequent meeting, on February 20, Marijuana Sawyer will join us from

1:10-1:30 to talk about the Future Teachers Program. From her email: “

I am looking at ways to integrate student recruitment and retention programming throughout the COEPS. I am beginning this process by asking department chairs what your needs are in relation to student recruitment, and, for ideas for what you would like to see happen in terms of retention activities for your current and future students.”

The mission of the department is to foster the development of foundational knowledge, skills, and dispositions most vital to the future work of outstanding educators. Our focus is to identify common core experiences that provide the basis for informed, reflective, and efficacious practice, while also providing specialized preparation for various educational professionals.
