This course provides a review of essential grammatical and structural features while introducing their finer points. Emphasis is placed on compound and complex sentence structures and is designed to lead students toward active mastery of the patterns and principles of formal written English." Course Outcomes After taking ESOL 0352, Advanced Intermediate Grammar, the student should: 1. show familiarity with the appropriate use of all verb tenses except the future progressive, the past perfect progressive, and the future perfect tenses; Note: please use the form didn’t use to and instruct students not to use the second form given, didn’t used to 2. correctly use present and future modal verbs and related expressions; 3. show familiarity with the correct use of gerunds and infinitives; 4. show familiarity with question formation and question words; 5. be able to transform active sentences into passive ones and be introduced to transforming passive sentences into active ones; 6. be able to use active and passive participial adjectives with some accuracy; 7. show familiarity with subordinate clause formation and the main kinds of subordinate clauses (noun, adjectival, and adverbial); 8. show familiarity with rules of punctuation for direct quotations and the rules for transforming direct quotations into indirect speech; 9. review the comparative and superlative forms of adjectives and adverbs; 10. review nouns and pronouns (this should be reinforced in writing and reading classes); 11. show familiarity in using another/(the) other(s), quantifiers, and articles A =100-90 Passing B=89-80 Passing C=79-70 Passing IP=69 or below. Be on time. If you are tardy more than 10 minutes, I may mark you absent for the whole hour. If you come to class more than 10 minutes late after lunch, after the 10-minute brake, or leave the class for more than 5 minutes, you will be marked absent for the whole hour. If you are late, come into class quietly, without a lot of noise. Attendance is very important. If you are absent more than 10 hours during the semester, you may be dropped from all of your classes. 3. If you are absent, please ask a classmate for any missed assignments. There will be no makeup exams without a documented, compelling reason. If you turn in your homework late, I will not accept it. WITHDRAWL POLICY: A student may drop his/her Gulfton courses for any reason until November 18th , 2010 at 4:30 p.m. A student may also be dropped from the Gulfton program for excessive absences until that date. After November 18th, the student will receive the grade that she/he has earned. College policy prohibits faculty from assigning a grade of W (“Withdrew,” or dropped) after the official drop date.
