ESOL 0341 is a course developing conversational skills in simple English with emphasis on
vocabulary and grammatical structures used in day-to-day living. Vocabulary, pronunciation,
simple sentence structure, and intonation patterns are stressed.
Statement of Purpose:
ESOL 0341, Beginning Conversation, seeks to prepare students for college classes and
speaking assignments in general by accomplishing the following objectives and goals:




Developing students’ conversational skills through the use of vocabulary and
grammatical structures in day-to-day living.
Introducing students to real life situations through the use of in-class
presentations and role plays.
Developing students’ listening comprehension skills through exposure to recorded
and teacher-generated listening comprehension material.
Giving students an awareness of the basic principles of English pronunciation as
well as common stress and intonation patterns through exposure to songs, jazz,
chants, and tapes.
Course Outcomes:
After taking ESOL 0341, you will be able to
 conduct simple conversations in familiar day-to-day situations
 understand short conversations or talks that use familiar vocabulary and
grammatical structures
 exhibit familiarity with common day-to-day vocabulary
 exhibit familiarity with basic English pronunciation and stress and intonation
patterns
 give a short presentation on a familiar topic using familiar vocabulary and
grammatical structures
 be generally understood b y someone used to dealing with non-native speakers of
English.

Class Policies:
Attendance: No absences are excused, and anyone who misses more than ten hours of class
will be dropped from the class. Attendance is calculated by the hour. Please make every effort
to be in class each night. Missing a lab or being late to a lab will also count as an absence.
Tardiness: Please be on time. If you miss more than 15 minutes, you will be counted absent
for that hour of class.
Withdrawals: F-1 students may not withdraw from the class without being out of status.
Other students must withdraw before November 8th in order to receive a “W”.
Cell phone and pagers: Please turn them off before you enter the classroom. An exception
will be made with an emergency situation. Please let me know you have it on.
Missed tests, late homework: There are no make-up tests or quizzes. The lowest test
score can be dropped if you are absent on quiz day. If you know you are going to be absent
on your presentation night, you may present on the next class night as long as you
understand your grade will be reduced by 10 points. If you are absent, please call a
classmate to get the assigned homework. I do not accept late homework. Please come
prepared for class.
Academic dishonesty: Any form of copying, cheating, or plagiarism will result in a grade of
0 for the assignment. The instructor will decide whether to permit you to makeup the work,
and under what circumstances it might be made up. See HCCS Student Handbook.
Students with disabilities: Students with learning or physical disabilities which might affect
