[ ] no quorum DID YOU KNOW US-China Educational Similarities (1.05 – 1.35) Carol Chu The college application process is different, in US it is determined by HS grades and tests, in China, the entrance exam is what is taken to be considered for college application. The test (Gao Kao) is given once a year and lasts for 2 days, if the test is missed the students must wait a year to retake. Lots of Chinese student attend classes on weekends. Teaching methodology is different. Class activities is one example, in America personal expression is valued heavily. Participation is part of a students grade. In China the classes are larger so it is harder to have a class discussion. The teacher lecturers more and the students listen. In America students can ask questions anytime, in China students are more quiet and talk when called upon and stand when speak. Creativity is valued differently in America vs. China. Gao Kao is highly valued and focused on in China prior to college. In college is where creativity is valued.
