An intermediate course in reading academically oriented English. Emphasis in placed on expanding English vocabulary and developing reading skills such as identifying main ideas, separating fact from opinion, and organizing information. Course Goals/Objectives: Students will be able to summarize and recognize the main idea of a passage as well as locate specific facts. They will be able to infer the meaning of new vocabulary and implied information. They will also develop their vocabulary and word study skills. Absence and Tardy Policies: According to HCC policy, the teacher may drop any student who has missed 12.5% of the classes. If you are more than 30 minutes late, you will be marked absent. In addition, after the 3rd absence, one point will be deducted from the final grade for each absence. For example, if you are absent 5 times, 2 points will be deducted from your final grade average. Make-up Policy: It is very important that you be in class on test days because there will be no make-up tests except in extreme emergencies. Plagiarism involves using the ideas of words of another person (either in whole or in part) without crediting the source. Cheating involves fraud and deception for the purpose of violating legitimate testing rules. A student guilty of a first offense will receive a grade of F on the assignment involved. For the second offense, the student will receive a grade of F for the course.
