PROJECT TITLE: Recreation Impact Inventory Time 3 Zion National Park
EFFECTIVE DATES: May 1, 2004 through October 31, 2004
PROJECT ABSTRACT: This project involves continued monitoring of recreational impacts initiated with a baseline inventory in 2000, immediately
prior to the start of operation of the Zion Canyon Shuttle System. The intent of the inventory and follow-up monitoring is to determine how
changes in visitor use patterns, resulting from operation of the shuttle system, change the level and location of recreational users impacts in
Zion Canyon and along the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway. Monitoring in 2002 found that there not significant changes to pull-out areas along
roads, but that impacts on adjacent lands had increase. This project will be the second monitoring event, using the same methodology and
locations as the initial baseline inventory in 2000 and the first monitoring event in 2002. This project is based on the Limits of Acceptable
Change theory. The information collected will be used for future managerial decisions regarding shuttle operations and visitor use management,
as well as target near-term priorities for restoration, resource protection and educating the public on impact reduction. On-site inventory will be
conducted in the vicinity of 6 ZionCanyon Shuttle Stops, all formal and informal vehicle pull-outs along the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway, and adjacent
land assessment around each pull-out and shuttle stop.
