NPS PROJECT SUMMARY Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit Cooperative Agreement Modification FUNDING AGENCY:�� National Park Service MODIFICATION NO.: NAU-135 COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT NO.: 1200-99-009 FUNDING AMOUNT: $ 52,326.00 INVESTIGATORS Contact Information:� �Chris Downum ( NAU Representative) and Lisa Leap (NPS Cooperator) PROJECT TITLE� FY04 Archaeological Site Monitoring and Treatment along the Colorado River Below Glen Canyon Dam, Grand Canyon National Park EFFECTIVE DATES: October 1, 2003 to September 30, 2004 PROJECT ABSTRACT: The Bureau of Reclamation has acknowledged that cultural resources along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park are potentially at risk due to the existence and operation of Glen Canyon Dam. �As required by the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966 (as amended), Section 106 and the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), Reclamation has undertaken studies to evaluate the impacts of Glen Canyon Dam upon the cultural resources of the Colorado River corridor.� To fulfill Reclamation�s Section 106 responsibilities and NPS mandates, a Programmatic Agreement was written and implemented in 1994.� As a way to implement the provisions of the Programmatic Agreement, the participating entities developed a Monitoring and Remedial Action Plan (MRAP).� The intent of the plan is to provide a structured program to meet the requirements of the PA and is the program document for a variety of potential mitigation approaches identified in the PA, with preservation in place as the guiding principle. ��� Reclamation and NPS will identify and evaluate newly exposed sites and features, and mitigate ongoing adverse effects to known properties.� Northern Arizona University (NAU) personnel will perform database management and graphics production.� In addition, NAU staff will utilize a geographic information system to spatially reference cultural resource data and perform analyses of the data.� This project is a cooperative venture between the Service and the University whereby both entities will cooperate in the development and implementation of a research program directly related to management of cultural resources within GRCA.� Grand Canyon National Park will provide funds for University participation in the project and will collaborate in all aspects of the project.� This project will be implemented in and completed in FY2004.
